Old School Round Up
So we got mentioned on the SkateDaily Top 3. This time the list is for the top three web sites dedicated to old school. It’s a mixed blessing, because the publicity is great, but I hate being pigeonholed. I’ve been trying to expand our appeal since forever. Trouble is, old guys write about what they know, I guess. Check out who submitted it though, could that really be the Lonnie Toft? Speaking of old school, does the name Buddy Carr ring a bell? It’s a name that has been pretty much synonymous with Tracker Trucks since… yes, forever. Well Buddy has decided to join up with Bennett Truks in a move that would be earthshaking if it were say, 1979. I always wanted to try some Bennet Truks, but guys seriously, this brings up one of my pet peeves in the skateboarding industry: The logo should add “with a decade or two of abstinence” next to the “Established in 1975” tagline. I’m thinking of you too, Shut Skates. Regardless, you can read the press release on Silverfish or watch a somewhat recent video interview with Buddy Carr giving a tour of the Tracker factory, made by the (old school) German…
Friday T&A on S&A: The pool boy
GVK found this gem: During my endless search for good skate videos from my era, I ran across the dream video and job. This actually happened to a friend of mine and yours try and guess who. The guy in the video is a better skater than him. Who could it be? We can’t host adult content on our site, not that I’d really care to anyway. The good part, or at least the part that relates to skateboarding is excerpted and safe for work. There’s some great, uh, dialogue in the movie, and it’s clear that while the male lead may be Woody Harrelson’s developmentally challenged, mongo pushing younger brother, he does skate, or at least used to at some point.
Day after Xtreme-mas blues
Post-holiday depression? Here’s a video of Santa bombing some hills. I know it’s a day late, but it’s still funny that it comes from CNN via their iReport site. I like the concept for getting eyewitness news up faster, but lately CNN is getting more and more like AM talk radio. Seriously, who cares what some hothead in Iowa thinks about the mortgage crisis. If I wanted to watch amateur news I’d turn on Fox.
Slovenian Phobia
Luka Karlin is a 15 year old skater from Slovenia whose crew put together a video called Phobia that you can watch on Vimeo. I always like to see skate spots in different parts of the country or world. There’s some cool stuff in Phobia, for example, the ramp in the top two pics has avery nice covered structure on tracks that slides off for skating. I think Phobia is broken into different parts, just click on the related videos that have Phobia in the title. In case you are wondering, Luka is one of the crazy Slovenians.
Built to Skate 2008
Lat year we highlighted the Built to Skate video, and now it’s time for another look. 2008’s version is available in two sizes 320×240 and 640×480. In case you don’t remember, the Built to Skate crew in Austria (who are they? I mean, where’s the link?) spends some time pouring guerilla concrete to make found obstacles more skateable, then they go out and document the session. Sounds great, right? It is pretty great. I liked last year’s video better, but maybe that’s because it was the first time I was introduced to the concept. In any case, it’s still a great concept. Check it out. – Thanks to Roman Astleitner for the tip.
GVK #41: AST Dew Tour. Vert is..
So Rich of E.P.M. and myself managed a couple press passes out of the A.S.T. crew. As it turns out, video was not allowed, that only slowed me down a couple of times. They threatened to kick me out. I shouted “Do you know who I am?” Apparently they had not heard of G.V.K.. Talk about living under a rock, or not really being involved in skateboarding. (the riding side). You may notice a difference in video quality. That is because I checked out a Get HI Def video camera from the E.P.M. library. Wow, what a difference. Watch out Mack Dawg productions. Well this video made me want a vert ramp so bad. How about you? P.S. I went to San Diego and skated the ramp at the Y.M.C.A that where 80 percent of these guys ride. Vert is dying and becoming incestuous. Lets build some f-king ramps and take it back bizzellitch.. – Poser off.
Life imitates art imitating life
Ah, Bart Simpson you old scamp. Skateboarders have a love hate relationship with him. At first it was just great to have you on our side, but like with so many skaters that keep with it over the years, he eventually ended up being branded as a kook, even though to my recollection he only wore a helmet in one episode. Nowadays we, as a skating population are more apt to give him grief for his poor style. However, a new era may have dawned on Bart’s skateboarding hijinks, thanks to the Skatebook. And thanks to Hulu, I don’t have to take the time to digitize it and eventually get kicked off YouTube again. You can watch the whole episode, but they also let you chose your own start and and end points, so you can embed just the segment you want to highlight. Genius.
Beez Nutz
Nothing beats a good dork session, except a dork session with some good skating. This is a clip from Beez III – Unusual Protocol. You can buy the whole thing on DVD combined with parts one and two over at beez.wiskate.com, which leads me to believe this crew is from Wisconsin. See, I told you I love the Midwest. Check it out after the jump. [Source: EPM]
Harrisburg, Oregon finished
We’ve got some shots of the newly finished Dreamland creation in Harrisburg, Oregon skatepark courtesy of Ryan Hass. It’s a 10,000 square foot facility, which is roughly three square feet per citizen of Harrisburg! It’s set to open on Sunday December 7th at 2:00pm. The location is on the south side of Smith Street, between the fire station and 6th Street.
GVK #40: The other Doctor
So my old friend Dr. Krohn has a birthday, the day after this video premiers. His age will remain a mystery, much like the type under ware he wears. I have known this guy for a while and I can’t believe he made it this far. (Many of my friends quit skating) With all the money in the world, (he rivals some of the Sheiks in Dubai as far as wealth is concerned,) you would think he would have his own Sno-Cone machine. He keeps it real though by cruising a cold war stick and a vanagon 91-carat “polar3”. Happy birthday, “WOLFSBLOOD”. P.S. Concentrate on landing more.
