AT&T Supports Soccer and Posing
At&T started running this commercial in late 2024, I just saw it on TV earlier this week and realized I never posted it. The This Is How We Soccer ad is about how AT&T supports soccer fans of all types, those who watch religiously, and those who “wear the jersey just for style club” AKA the posers! They’re standing in the middle of the flat taking selfies! Is that better or worse than using RC cars in the skate park? It’s fitting they chose A Seattle Sounders kit for one of the actors, total plastic fan base. SHOTS FIRED! It also features former US Women’s team legend Mia Hamm. Skate and Annoy: Your portal for all skateboarding and soccer crossovers. Shot at Channel Street, let’s hope San Pedro Skatepark Association got some dough for this. – Thanks to Bobcat for being the official unpaid S&A fact checker..
Pickles and Skateboards
The Portland Pickles are a collegiate summer baseball team that does a lot of funny promotions and events at the ballpark in the vein of a very scaled back Savannah Bananas. They also have a big, goofy mascot named Dillion who occasionally gets into some trouble. OnAugust 3rd they’re having “Dilly Hawk Pro Skater” night where you will get a chance to meet some pro skaters. I’m not sure what constitutes a pro skater these days, but interestingly one of the pros is Anita Sanford. If you’re of a certain age, you might remember her as Anita Tessensohn from her part in Powell-Peralta’s Public Domain, or her appearance in the Powell Prelate “Some Girls Play With Dolls” ad.
Diego Chara With Longboard
The hardest working man in MLS, Diego Chara must have been gifted a custom longboard made by a fan. The picture on the right shows him standing next to another Portland Timbers legend and former player Dairon Asprilla, who was in town celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Timbers. The photo was taken as he was entering the stadium for the match against Minnesota on July 7th. Amazingly, Chara is 39 and still playing. His last start was on July 30th in a 4-0 win against Mexican side Atlético de San Luis. If you’re keeping track, this is the 11th MLS related post here on Skate and Annoy, your hub for skateboarding and Major League Soccer.
Adidas Rolling Links
It’s not the first time someone tried to bring skateboarding and/or Punk Rock to golf. It even predates those old excellent Nike SB commercials from their first toe around. I’m talking about High Speed Productions short-lived Schwing! magazine that was around from 1999-2001. Adidas calls the line Rolling Links, and near as I can tell… actually I can’t tell that there’s any skateboarding influence here at all. I guess you have to invent ways to hype product lines, and here it is, working, because you’re reading about it on skateboarding web site. Marketing seems kind of forced, right down the promo video with a tiny bit of skateboarding tacked on to the beginning and end. – Thanks to Troy for the tip.
LAFC Tifo
I’m what is known as a hater. I hate this club and I hate their supporters group. Here’s a Suicidal Tendencies themed tifo for their 2024 season opener against the Seattle Sounders (who I also hate). All I wanted was a supporters group with some history, but you wouldn’t give it to me… Skate and Annoy is your go-to resource for Major League Soccer and skateboarding.
Austin FC, Adidas Skateboarding, and No Comply Go Full Kit Wanker
As part of my continued effort to place Skate and Annoy among the world’s most prominent Skateboarding/MLS crossover sites I present to you this collab between No Comply skateshop and Austin FC. I got beefs. The green looks immature and cheap, especially compared to more pleasing greens with that have a storied history. Second of all, this is essentially a uniform, and you know how much skateboarders love a good uniform…
Local skateboard hero spotted on TV
This is not going to be a trend here… or maybe it is. This rad dude with a bitichin’ ‘tude was spotted on TV during an MLS match between Sporting Kansas City and LAFC. Soccer and Skateboarding crossovers are the sport of the future. He looks like Clint Dempsey.
Can you find a bunch of balls?
Random, unbranded kid’s cup from a restaurant in a mall in Florida. Looks like he’s hanging loose while doing a finger flip, and has a giant baseball sticker on the tail. Makes sense. Oh wait, there’s a tennis ball on his show too. The text probably says “Can you find ___ balls on this cup?” So it actually does make sense.
Tube Dude in Sarasota
Sarasota has metal stick figure sculptures called Tube Dudes sprinkled all over town. I haven’t been to Payne Park in a handful of years. I don’t think this Tube Dude was there during my last visit. The baseball cap and basketball in hand are a bit of a head scratcher until you read the plaque dedicating it to “Coach Dan,” who must have been a basketball coach… who liked skateboarding?
Football Season is Over
Whenever I’m designing a custom football scarf for my favorite team, I make sure to check out the available clip art options, which for some reason include a skateboard. Ouch! Mein Text!
