Nike SB App
This is a little old, and a little odd. There are already a few social apps and web sites out there for sharing skate spots and footage, and a couple for playing S.K.A.T.E., But the Nike SB App rolls them all into one and then some, giving new meaning to the term “tech skater.” Nyuk nyuk nyuk… The tagline is “Connect. Progress. Respect.” The app lets you play the game of S.K.A.T.E. worldwide, connect with other users, and accept challenges: Step up to new challenges issued by Nike SB and our pro team to help you keep progressing. Share your footage and have the chance to get noticed by Nike SB, our team, and many more! Then there’s something called a “trick tree” Lose yourself in skateboarding’s endless creative process with our extensive Trick Tree, further inspiring you to learn and expand your skills. Watch the pros demonstrate with new filming and viewing techniques, and help expand the Trick Tree with your own footage. The whole thing sounds marginally acceptable until you get to the point where you get to earn virtual badges, which is a little bit too much in the Dora the Explorer vein for me. The video…
Brooklyn Street to the Max
An article in the Sunday Business section of the Oregonian features a picture of Brooklyn Street Skate Spot as part of an illustration of the property that the expanding Max line (light rail) plans to purchase. BSSS has known about this they became legit, but I’m not sure what this means to the spot. A quick check on the Oregonian web site to find a link to this article also turned up a to Daddies new location and another with Paul Rodriguez breifly talking about NIke in the skateboarding shoe business an his desire to have skateboarding in the Olympics.
Any little bumps?
The folks (volks) at Made for Skate recently had a display in The Skateboard Museum called Metal Battle in celebration of a Nike SB collab styled after the oldest school Roller Derby skateboards. Dig the inserts on these. The design for the show flyer was lifted from this poster, which was also on display. It’s a vintage 60’s silkscreened poster advertisement for a body shop. I’d place it at 1965-66 if I had to guess. So why was the the show called the Metal Battle? To celebrate they brought out some vintage steel wheeled death traps and had a session. Please skate in our BMX pool
Apparently the did let four wheeled freaks in the pool. And yes, I agree with the reader comment who finds the fact that they plastered “The Pool” all over everything. I get it. Everyone gets it. It was built in a pool. The place probably still reeks of chlorine. They must pay their branding managers well. Pool build time lapse
A bit of stretch featuring this BMX only facility on Skate and Annoy once, let alone twice, but I’m a sucker for time lapse construction movies, and this spot is cool. Check it out after the jump, some before and during footage, and lots of footage of guys on bike – not skating but still killing it. – Thanks to MC.
Please don’t skate in the Pool
“The Pool” is a temporary installation in a public swimming pool in London. Nike 6.0, the action sports (excluding skateboarding) division set this up for BMX action. If you’re a UK reader of this site who doesn’t have a bike, they’ll even loan you one. This idea is… interesting. I wonder if they’d let someone skate it? I know, skateboarders are always glomming on to the blood sweat and tears of the the action sports industry. When are we going to get it together and make something for ourselves? The Dagenham Swimming Pool sessions end June 12th. That’s one massive temporary structure. – Thanks to Seth Levy for the tip. [Source: Curated Mag]
Protesting a Nike skatepark in Japan
Homeless folks inhabiting Miyashita Park in Tokyo are understandably upset about the fact that their local government has sold the park out from under them. Apparently there were no public hearings or notices before the sale to NIke became final. NIke has plans to turn it into a well-landscaped skate plaza. The park has a sizable indigenous homeless population that will likely be displaced, and they’ve gained some support worldwide, but it seems to me that everyone is pissed off at the wrong people. Don’t get pissed at the people who bought your home for a bargain, get pissed at the bank that foreclosed on you. According to a short video about the situation, Nike refuses to respond publicly to anyone concerning the park. Not the greatest public relations plan, but maybe it’s geared towards some sort of Japanese culture hook that I’m not hip to. Watch the vid after the jump. – Thanks to 100% Talkboarder for the tip. They climb above ground and then attack
Mole men. Mo-oh-olemen. This is supposed to be a skatepark built in an old railway tunnel in Petersfield, England, but so far the only mention of of it I can find is that it was built by Nike 6.0 for some BMX contest. No, this is not the only underground tunnel skatepark in the UK.
