4 Rad Babes
Refinery 29 has an article on female skateboarders titled Meet 4 Rad Babes Lighting Up The S.F. Skate Scene: Let’s be real; for some ladies it’s the hipster mating call, but for others it’s the soundtrack to the deep skateboarding history that our sweet city is steeped in. While it may seem that the dudes are running the streets, there are quite a few badass babes who are making waves in the skate community — and are sitting pretty while doing it! Between the Thrasher empire’s fearless female with a particular flair (read: obsession) for Marc Jacobs, a pint-sized skate powerhouse, a gritty photographer, and a mighty fine ‘zine maker, these ladies definitely have the 411 on why S.F. is king when it comes to skateboarding. The four ladies profiled are Sally Vitello Hubert (Daughter of Fausto Vitello), Josie Ramondetta (Photographer), Ashley Trujillo (Yes) and Reija Collinson (Co-owner of Lowcard) Mag Check out Meet 4 Rad Babes.
Underexposed: A Women’s Skateboarding Documentary
Underexposed is a film by Amelia Brodka focusing on the plight of women in the professional skateboarding arena. At a time when women’s skateboarding seems bigger than ever, there seem to be fewer opportunities for girls to pursue the sport. How can this be changed? Underexposed explores the past, present and future of women’s skateboarding. It focuses on the current uprise of female skaters by featuring footage of girls ripping all over the world. The film couples skate footage with interviews from the top marketing and media professionals of the skateboarding industry. Interviews include the heads of: Thrasher, TransWorld, Etnies, Toy Machine, SkateOne and Hoopla. By exploring the business side of skateboarding, Underexposed seeks to figure out how to generate more opportunities for women in skateboarding. The first pubic screening of Underexposed is February 14th, 9:00PM at the Fry St Theater (1210 W. Hickory) in Denton, Texas as part of the Thin Line Film Festival
Friday T&A on S&A: La Femme de Maryhill
Lots of positive things going on at the first all female downhill event at Maryhill, but of course I’ve objectified here on S&A. That’s OK ladies, our readers will enjoy this video from Push Culture News for it’s empowering images of females, and not because they (readers) are pigs.
How do active women stay active?
No, it’s not an ad for safety equipment. It’s Don Draper’s worst nightmare, Stayfree Maxi-pads tackles the skateboard set. What a break for this young stuntwoman. The skateboard says 70’s but the fashions are looking a little early 80’s. The seller of this item probably could have gotten a lot more for if they had instead listed the Farah Fawcett Shampoo advert that was on the back. Since Farrah’s Faberge shampoo was launched in 1978, this advert couldn’t have been much later than that.

Supergirl Jam
Here’s a couple photos from something called the Supergirl Jam that was recently held in Venice Beach. They had a snowboard rail event with trucked in snow, a skateboard contest and an inline skating contest. Ladies please, if you want to be taken seriously, ditch the rollerblades. You’re so far behind the curve on this one that you might be ahead of the curve. You know, for the next big, uh, resurgence of inline skating… Supergirl Jam related post: Supergirl comic book skateboard cover. Albany heads – Hold your horses, I’m still waiting on a few pics.
Commercial Barrage
I haven’t uploaded any commercials in a while, among other things. I’m so far behind and there are so many occurrences of skateboards in commercials these days that I’m going to gang a few together each time we post. This installment features 5 Hour Energy Drink, Kohls department store, Kashi cereal, Axe deoderant, and LIV dolls.
Late snap of the week
Jessica Starkweather at the Oregon-you-know-what, you know-know-where edition. I take this shot of her every time I see her at Pier Park, though usually the timing is better, as it’s actually a double truck frontside carve grind. Enlarge-o-rama.
SOTW 7-27-09: Deathbox Edger
This week’s Shot of the Week is Melissa Dafnos going frontside over the deathbox at MC’s bowl. The thing I found out when I finally looked at this shot full size is that she started out with a grind but ended up with a high sided weird edger over the deathbox. It’s all in the details. Check out the full size Shot of the Week.
