Reading Revolution 900
There’s a Tony Hawk-branded series of books for young teens (or tweens?) called Tony Hawk’s 900 Revolution. There’s no mission statement about the series being designed to engage kids in reading other than a tagline on the front page that says “Join the reading revolution.” You can read sample chapters and find out about characters like Omar, who is “aggressive and inventive, and often likened to Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.” The premise of the series: At the dawn of the new millennium, Tony Hawk landed the first-ever 900, finally capturing the Holy Grail of skateboarding. At that moment in time, everything changed. A mysterious force shattered his board and scattered the pieces across the globe. Today, a talented group of teens unite in an eternal quest to bring the board – and its power – back together again. Adventure, action sports, and sci-fi rolled into one super-hot series! Your kid (or you with a cleverly disguised entry) can win a chance to appear as a character in a future book. They look a little bit like comic books don’t they? They aren’t but they do have a 16 page graphic novel insert. Extreme!™
Children’s Playmate
Six months behind the first issue of Thrasher, but still highly influential. Children’s Playmate, the June/July 1981 issue from Children’s Health Publications. No other skateboarding content in this issue. Not bad for a goat, a duck, and a chicken.
Burnside: It’s for the kids, man.
Like the flyer says, bring your kids to Burnside next week(!) for lessons in skateboarding and etiquette (See potty mouth prevention.) What about a litter seminar? A little birdy told me Burnside finally has 501(c)(3) status.
Peanuts, circa MCMLXV
Peanuts. Not a coloring book, but a book to color, from the famous comic strip created by Charles M. Schulz. Authorized edition no less. Copyright MCMLXV, which is 1965. I had to look it up. Pretty formal for a bunch of little funny looking squished head kids. This is my favorite era of Peanuts. Everyone looks like doughboys left out in the sun for a little too long. There are no skateboards inside the “book to color.” Snoopy looks cool as usual.
Boo.
Because they didn’t have a greeting card addressed “Dear Readers.” Ghost on a skateboard, with a pumpkin. Happy Halloween. Away you go, Grandson!
Hey you kids!
Listen you little brats, how many times do I have to yell at you? For the love of Pete, that skateboard ramp bed is not for jumping! It’s for laying there and thinking about skateboarding. I swear I’ll get out the belt if I hear you muttering about how a $1000 might have been better spent if you slept on the floor and took that money and built something you could actually skate on instead. I’ll give you an X-treme!™ paddling on your behind if I catch you reenacting certain scenes from the Search for Animal Chin. If Tommy Guerrero didn’t jump off a bridge than you shouldn’t either! How the “H” “E” double hockey sticks is that pronounced anyway? Is all that rock-rap rave music making you deaf? I told you it’s one and a half syllables, with a soft “b” instead of a two word concatenation like ramp-bed. What are you, a maroon? In my day we slept under the platforms of the Clown Ramp… Called ourselves Art and Steve Godoy and were happy about it. – Thanks to Sarib Khalsa for the tip.
Rastamouse
Rastamouse, is a BBC production featuring a detective and/or special agents who fight crime and play in a reggae band. Awesome voices. Visit one of their many web sites if you are in the mood to giggle and annoy your wife. Love it. Looks cool too. Rastamouse is not just a one episode skater, he’s on board for book covers and personal appearances as well. – Thanks to Andrew Mendoza for the tip.
Yo Gabba Discount
Remember when copy machine art was de rigueur on the skate zine scene? Remember those Yo Gabba Gabba Vans? The Vans outlets seem to have stopped carrying anything in my size, but thankfully the kids shoes are available at generic shoe prices. Two box scans after the jump.
I’m a 2 + 2 = 4 man
Mechanical skateboard rides are the new bounce house. They come in Canadian (top) and American versions too. Photos from Extravaganza Entertainment and Galaxy Multi Rides. – Thanks to Boy Ipoh for the tip.
The dropout squirrel
Crazy Squirrel de gesjeesde eekhoorn, which translates form Dutch to “The dropout squirrel?” OK. Screen caps after the jump, or get some on your own. – Thanks to Matthijs for the tip.
