Skate and Annoy: Daily
Two trick pony/dog
No, you haven’t seen the last skateboarding dog post yet. This dog, who might be named Dash, does old school kickflips (well, after a fashion, but it’s still a kind of a kickflip without the ollie) and some sort of reverse Bertlemann slide. He’s an innovator, just like Tony Hawk. – Thanks to Greg Baller for the tip.
Bad Cats & Cat Eaters
During my last pilgrimage back to Chicago I stopped by Logan Hardware again to buy some records and play some video games. I picked up my favorite Devo release, available on vinyl for the first time. At least I think it was never released on vinyl, but in any format, the Hardcore Devo demo tracks compilation has been out of print for 20 years. ( In gathering links for this post I was saddened to learn that Devo Drummer Alan Myers succumbed to cancer shortly after the release date. ) The last time I was at Logan Hardware, took a pic of 720 video game screen that’s still my cover photo on Facebook. This time I picked up a puffy sticker featuring Alf riding a skateboard, and I played some Bad Cats pinball for the first time in many years.
Gene pool
It’s been a while since we checked in on Gene’s My DIY backyard project. Looks like it’s done except for the decks. Additional coverage available at Confusion. Looks super fun.
Spiderman vs the Rocket Racer
It’s 1978 and the Rocket Racer is back in Volume 1 #182 of The Amazing Spiderman. I haven’t seen the first appearance of the Rocket Racer, but the storyline mimics the ’90s animated Spiderman series, except the Rocket Racer in the cartoon is a teenager, while the original Rocket Racer is drawn more like a full grown man. The Rocket Racer has a skateboard that allows him to defy gravity. Not only does it stick to walls, but it magically adheres the riders feet to the board while riding vertical surfaces. Rocket uses his skateboard to perpetrate crimes to pay his mother’s or gandmother’s medical bills. It’s the age old story of a good hearted person forced into a life of crime. The pages with skateboarding in them are available after the jump, as well as the entire episode from the 1994 animated series.
Burnquist’s backyard helicopter antics
Danny way dropped in off that helicopter in a different decade, so it’s not the first time, but Bob has taken the helicopter thing a step further, also using it as his personal tow-in rope. It’s pretty amazing as far as mega ramp action goes, but there are a couple times when I’m actually more impressed by the pilot in the helicopter. The helicopter doesn’t make an appearance until the last quarter of the video, and the rest is filled with typically high skilled skating that you’d expect from Bob Burnquist. It’s part of a series he’s making called “The Dreamland Series.” – Thanks to Simon Woodstock for the tip.
Betty & Veronica in Wheel Zeal
I’ll join you too… The official title of this publication is “Archie’s Girls Betty & Veronica.” Archie’s been skating since the 60’s. His previous appearances here have only cover-only affairs, but this issue (#250 October, 1976) actually has a skateboarding story inside. Archie gets away with murder as far as the ladies go. I don’t know if Betty and Veronica have ever wised up, but you’d think they would have ditched him. Veronica always seemed more appealing to me when I could stomach to read Archie, but in this comic I’m squarely on Betty’s side. Turns out Betty is a good skater. She’s so good that she’s giving pointers to the guys in the gang, who are doting on her purely because of her skills and not because of her feminine wiles. Big surprise, Veronica is jealous of the attention. I wonder if this the origin of the term “Skate Betty?” Sit back and enjoy the “Wheel Zeal” and let me know if you what the heck the”Shu-Fly” variation of the Christie is. UPDATE: The Wheel Zeal title gets used again in a 1999 Betty & Veronica skateboarding story.
Skateboarding Saves!
Imagine if the Weekly World News only produced content for skateboarders. Well, you don’t have to becasue yo ucan just go visit Skateboarding Saves for all your alien/bigfoot skateboarding needs.Bigfoot made an appearance here on S&A once, maybe 5 years ago but I couldn’t find the post. I’d swear it had something to do with Salba, but I can’t find it.
Richie Rich
This is Richie Rich #163 published in February of 1978 by Harvey Publications. As a child, I never understood the appeal of Richie Rich. Why would anyone want to read about a kid who was absurdly rich unless he was also Batman? In 1978, Richie is on the forefront of the novelty skateboard trend with this dollar sign shaped deck. He’s got bling too – that looks like some sort of gem covered mounting hardware. “With a model like this, I’ll never be skate-bored!” Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk…
Robot on a skateboard on a plate
As Box-o-Car used to say, “What a drag, such a bummer. Here it comes, the end of summer.” But until that actually gets here, there’s plenty of opportunities for an old fashioned BBQ with your plastic robot plates. The funny thing about this robot is that he already has wheels, or at least treads, and he’s still riding a skateboard. He does look happy though.
California Girls
I feel sorry for the “model” who got a big break only to end up bent over facing away from the camera with a Jimmy’Z fanny pack and her ass being the main attraction of the poster. “Look Ma, I’m on a poster!” Unbelievably, the seller thinks this is worth $79! I made an offer $10, which he refused. I upped the ante to $11, and the seller countered with $35. I don’t think they recognized the sarcasm in my bids. – Thanks to Matthijs for the tip
