Electric skateboard technology marches on…
But does anyone care? Looks like they are getting more powerful though. This one from E-Glide is supposed to be all terrain. They even make one with an aluminum deck. I don’t think this really qualifies as earth-friendly green technology since you could just push with your feet for zero emissions, depending on what you’ve eaten earlier in the day. Santa’s skate sled
It’s the Ice Surfer, the invention of Willard Gebien from Libertyvlle, Illinois. Debra Fischler sent in a picture of the device from 1966. An auction for a mint condition Ice Surfer showed up about a month ago, I sent it to Neil but I guess he forgot or wasn’t interested. I believe it went for about $150, I was tempted but I just don’t have the extra cash floating around. I’d never seen close up pictures of the actual Ice Surfer board before then, but when it rains, it pours. There’s another one on eBay right now. It’s well worn and slightly damaged, so the opening bid of $149 is pretty steep considering the condition. Peep some pics of the pristine version after the jump.
Trampskate
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any weirder. Here’s a video from the guy who started the Trampskate company. It’s basically a funky set of trucks you can mount to a board and use to practice skateboard moves on the grind rail next to your specialliy inclined trampoline. On the one hand, it’s great to see someone chasing their dreams and making something where nothing existed before. On the other hand… WTF???? I thought it was a goof at first, but the the amount of effort spent precludes it from being an elaborate joke. I mean, he sells actual manufactured goods over at thetrampskatecompany.com. – Thanks to Eric from Rockford
Technically a tank scooter
According to Gizmodo, this thing is called the DTV Shredder. No matter how many times it shows up on the internet as a tank skateboard, it’s still a scooter. I love how these product videos all have macho electric guitars or techno music in them. Just once I wish they’d have some really sensitive music instead. Something like Morrissey or the Carpenters. – Thanks to Templeton and Paul Fujita for the tip.
A momentary loss of muscular coordination
I had a lapse of judgement, I made some bids I couldn’t back up. Like that time in 8th grade when I almost got stuck paying $60 for a cake at that Boy Scout charity bake auction. These Skatewings are freakish and rare. Just try finding one with a Google image search. Brewce Martin owns one. I was upset at first, but then I realized that eBay bidder Member Id: o***b must be a fan of the site and intend to send it to me as payment for countless hours wiled away reading Skate and Annoy, right? RIGHT!
Wheelbone connected to the…
The Wheelbone is blowing up. I suppose if you are going to go with the training equipment method, this weird rubber device that looks like a marital aid makes more sense than a special set of soft trucks. $20 gets you a sort of board condom that is ribbed for her pleasure. And speaking of marital aids, check out how the logo throbs on the web site. It’s very lewd, yet strangely enticing. Go ahead, it’s OK to experiment while you’re in college. Are you feeling vaguely confused? It might have something to do this inexplicably strange boardslide shot. Seriously. Check out the throbbing Wheelbone logo. – Thanks to Aaron for the tip. He’s got Sole Skate, it’s super bad.
Well now. Isn’t this special? The Sole Skate is a brand new product with a slick new commercial. It’s almost as if there is some money behind the product. Who could that manufacturer be? Why none other than the same folks that brought us the Razor Scooter. Awesome videos after the jump. If you can believe it, one of the professionals actually kickflips one of these things. Aside from just mangling the traditional form of a skateboard, I give these guys credit for coming up with a braking mechanism that engages once your weight is no longer on the board. If you are going to ride an inferior copy of a skateboard, you don’t want it shark biting anyone in the ankles when you fall off it. – Thanks to John Aguilar for the tip.
Oblique ideas about skateboarding
Once again, these spin offs have become so numerous that I hardly even consider them skateboard related. It’s like they are riffing on something completely different. Michele Camerlengo cops to borrowing inspiration from snakeboards of all things. It’s only a matter of time before the Obliqo becomes two separate foot items without the “board” connecting them in the middle.
Rocket powered skateboard
I think we’ve mentioned a few rocket powered skateboards before, and now we’re giving you the tools to do it yourself. OK, not giving you the tools, you need to buy the book. Aside from skateboards, author Dan Pollino is involved in amateur rocketry with engines on a much powerful scale. He’ll teach you how to make those rockets too, which is good because quite frankly, the engines on the skateboard don’t look nearly as impressive on video as they do in the stills. But then again, who want’s to stand on top of a notoriously unstable explosive? Might as well make it somewhat, uh, safe. – Thanks to Eric Shea for the tip.
Ice Skateboards from Woman’s Day to 1967
Yeah, that’s right. I read Woman’s Day all the time. I like to brush up on my jello recipes, kick-knacks and diets. You know, keeping it real. Imagine my joy and delight when I perused 8 Incredible Ice Sculptures, which included this photograph from Eugenio Franchi. There are skateboards made out of ice, and then there are skateboards made for riding on the ice. Almost a year ago I did a little digging around on the history of ice-boards. The daughter of Willard Gebien, one of the inventors wrote in to let us know she first ice-boarded in 1964. Debra Fischler had this to say: The winter of 1964 I was iceskate boarding. It was fun! My father is Willard Gebien… I only have one still picture on hand -1966 my dog riding the skate board, however my cousins may have home movies and pictures in their attic. Also, I remember the Ice Capades in Chicago used the board in their clown act. Catch the picture after the jump.
