Best of Skate Fate Too

GSD has released the Best of Skate Fate Too, available in hardcover and softcover. I already have the first volume and I’ll be stoked to have the second one on the way. Definitely worth checking out if you’re into… you know.. all this vintage skateboard culture.

The Lords of Central Eastside (Industrial Council)

A lot like 70’s era Dogtown, if you try to drop in on one of Portland’s Central Eastside bike lanes, the locals will throw kale at you… Errr.. Yeah, sorry. That’s all I got. I didn’t even know Portland had a “Central Eastside” district, but I’m obviously not upwardly mobile so that might explain it. The Central Eastside Industrial Council “is a business association focused solely on the Central Eastside Industrial District’s economic success, vitality, and livability.” CEIC includes Burnside and as such, they are not shy of including Burnside and skateboard graphics in their marketing materials.

SBA Stands for Square Peg, Round Hole

SBA actually stands for, wait for it… Skate Board Association. Despite an incredibly pedestrian name, the idea behind it is somewhat interesting. It’s another skateboarding league with a couple differences. Coed teams compete against each other, and everybody gets paid something, even if they don’t make the podium. Now I have to admit, I assume these are differences, because I pay zero attention to the ins and outs of the other skateboarding competitions. Seeing a coed team of skateboarders compete against other coed teams is something I’d watch least once. Who is paying for this and what are their motives? Some investors, including Professional basketball player and former skateboarder Gary Payton II.

Even E.T. has Skateboard Connection

One of the actors/operators of the E.T. suit is Matthew De Merrit who was 12 years old at the time the movie was filmed. He was born with no legs and still uses a skateboard to get around, although it looks like he may have graduated to electric version these days. The photo above right is from the L.A. 40th anniversary screening in 2022.

AT&T Supports Soccer and Posing

At&T started running this commercial in late 2024, I just saw it on TV earlier this week and realized I never posted it. The This Is How We Soccer ad is about how AT&T supports soccer fans of all types, those who watch religiously, and those who “wear the jersey just for style club” AKA the posers! They’re standing in the middle of the flat taking selfies! Is that better or worse than using RC cars in the skate park? It’s fitting they chose A Seattle Sounders kit for one of the actors, total plastic fan base. SHOTS FIRED! It also features former US Women’s team legend Mia Hamm. Skate and Annoy: Your portal for all skateboarding and soccer crossovers. Shot at Channel Street, let’s hope San Pedro Skatepark Association got some dough for this.

Aquabats in a Skateshop

The Aquabats hanging out at Money Ruins Everything skate shop in Oklahoma City. What’s not to love? It’s hilarious that they appear to be out in public walking around in their Aquabats uniforms. It reminds me of seeing Rocket from the Crypt hanging out in matching jumpsuits that they all changed into after their gig. Can we get that TV show back on the air please?

Skate Shoes of the Rich and Absurd from Brooks Brothers

Brooks Brothers posted this image on social media promoting the “classic collegiate style, updated for that fresh-season mindset.” This ad really hit home for me. I basically dropped out of college the first time I went, mostly because of skateboarding. Maybe if I had dressed in luxury clothing and worn those shoes I could have made something of myself instead of leaving behind a legacy of a skateboarding website that I populate purely for my own amusement. Fresh season mindset for the win!

Diego Chara With Longboard

The hardest working man in MLS, Diego Chara must have been gifted a custom longboard made by a fan. The picture on the right shows him standing next to another Portland Timbers legend and former player Dairon Asprilla, who was in town celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Timbers. The photo was taken as he was entering the stadium for the match against Minnesota on July 7th. Amazingly, Chara is 39 and still playing. His last start was on July 30th in a 4-0 win against Mexican side Atlético de San Luis. If you’re keeping track, this is the 11th MLS related post here on Skate and Annoy, your hub for skateboarding and Major League Soccer.

Devo Circa 2025

I caught DEVO in Seattle this weekend. It was a great show because it ended at 8pm and I didn’t have to stay up past midnight. And oh yeah, it was also a great show! They played for around an hour and a half or more, including a couple of quick costume changes. Aside from a couple songs in the first third of the set where it seems to drag a little, the rest of the night was very high energy. They opened with “Don’t Shoot (I’m A Man)” off Something For Everyone, and the rest was a mix of songs from Are We Not Men, Oh, No! It’s Devo, Freedom Of Choice, and Duty Now For The Future before closing with a guest appearance from Booji Boy singing “Beautiful World” off New Traditionalists. I found myself with a big stupid grin involuntarily plastered on my face the whole time, and Booji nearly brought me to tears with no alcohol or drugs involved! I highly recommend seeing them live if you can. Skateboarding? During “Freedom Of Choice” they showed some of the original music video footage shot at Marina del Rey skatepark on the big screen. We’re all DEVO.
