Workin’ at the Car Wash
A few skateboarding stills from the 1976 movie Car Wash, starring Richard Pryor and George Carlin, thanks to Josef Heffner. Man, that is one narrow board…
Potpourri of skateboarding in the media
I can use “potpourri” right? I mean it’s core, isn’t it? Clockwise from the top left. Tony Hawk shows you how to ollie on one of CNN’s iReport videos. Nice PR move, as if an ordinary citizen gained a private audience with Tony in his training facility and captured an impromptu interview. While we’re talking about CNN, I need to repeat how annoyed I am with CNN’s recent fixation on “iReporters” and call in opinions. It’s supposed to be the news, not amateur talk radio. Next: More pool skating mortgage forclosure pieces, this time via the BBC who took a camera crew out for a very, very short video. Rumor has it that the Reader’s Digest is also working on a rehash. Next: Weird Al Yankovic collects Vans… Err, OK. Lastly, the New York Times Home & Garden section highlights a skater owned property that cost a pretty penny. Who knew that the team manager position for Think Skateboards paid that well. – Thanks to John Aguilar, Rich Burton, Dean Tyrell, Corey Nelson and Aaron Shims (via Bordistan) for the tips.
Extra evolves
From cave man straight to bowl rider, skipping the mongo period all together. Here’s a commercial for Extra gum as spotted by frequent (and frequently funny) reader JAKE AND ANNNOY. It’s a video camera pointed at the TV, but the highest quality I’ve ever seen. Ah, techmology…
Fresno pools video
Dean of Team Shralp/100 points out this preview of an upcoming project. The clip is chock full of amazing pool skating. Dean is a bike rider who has been a real supporter of the skatepark effort in Portland, coming out for meetings and raising money. Sorry about the Ed Benedict thing dude, vert riders ahd nothing to do with the bike ban. Check it out after the turn.
WWHD?
JF Fullum sent me some pics of the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in a while, outside of the hole in Mark’s back yard. It’s a giant chocolate skateboard that his mother gave him for Easter, and mind you, he’s a grown man now, but I’m just jealous. It came from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. so I guess I can cut my mom some slack.
Crest Spinbrush skateboard toothbrush
This is pretty underwhelming, the wheels don’t even spin. I do have a couple other skateboard-themed products from the realms of personal hygiene marketing that are coming in the next couple of days that are definitely more interesting. Until then, here’s the Spinbrush. – Thanks to Mrs Kilwag for the tip.
Awesome Show, Great Job
The Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! is one of those programs that you either love or hate. Always low budget, it’s like one of those cable network comedy sketch shows, only it’s actually really funny, and at times very surreal. It’s on Adult Swim, so that ought to give you a good idea of what to expect. This video is an excerpt from a parody of MTV style “youth programming” called the “Jim and Derrick Show,” and it’s shot at a skatepark. Hit the ramps! – Thanks to Daniel Evans for the tip.
Los Super Juniors in Mexico
I found this Mexican comic book, Los Super Juniors over at Weirdo Toys. And speaking of Mexican skateboarding, check out this video from Steven Bailey found at the Mercava Skateboards. It’s got spots from different states in Mexico, including the one where tipster John Aguilar learned to skate tranny when he was a Super Junior. It’s a super rough looking the banked ditch/half pipe thing in Mexico city behind the Corona beer brewery. Look for it at about 2:38 into the vid. 2023 Update: Follow me down a rabbit hole while I try to track down Mexican comic books.
Reeses Puffs Commercial
Spohn Ranch built a miniramp for a Reeses Puffs commercial shot in a backyard of Pasadena, CA home that I have yet to see on air. Keep your eyes glued to Nickelodeon.
Let’s film a music video in a pool, again.
An unnamed Domino Records band wants to shoot a music video in an empty pool in the L.A. area. They say it will take a good day of shooting, so it sounds like it will need to be a permission pool. I told the rep that it sounded like a lazy scam to find an empty pool to skate, but he assured me it was legit. They need skaters too, and there will be some sort of compensation involved. You can contact Robert Nell if you want to hook him up. In the mean time, let’s revisit a brief (incomplete) history of skateboarding in pool like structures in music videos. In the top row there are two shots from the current running band AFS (Arthritic Foot Soldiers) that has a video shot in a wooden bowl for the song “Chicks, Beer, Fame & Money” off the album Immature Nobodies. Check out the longboard guitar. It’s an interesting application, but not nearly as well done as the one featured on the cover of the Surf Punks first album My Beach. Then of course there is the grandaddy of all bowl riding skate videos, any of Agent Orange’s segments from SkateVisions. Another…
