What, no Mr. Greenjeans?
Not much to say about this 1981 clip of Tony Hawk on the old children’s show Captain Kangaroo. I didn’t know the Captain was still on the air in 1981. It’s a little disappointing actually, since Tony’s appearance isn’t live on set with the Captain. Instead, it’s just video footage of tony skating Del Mar on a Steve Caballero board no less. The Captain’s crew even managed to record an old sea chanty titled Skateboard Johnny, not to be confused with the song Skateboard Johnny featured in this collection of 70’s skateboard tunes, or this UK child molester named Skateboard Johnny. Like pointing a video camera at a mirror.
So this post contains a YouTube video made from television broadcasts showing YouTube videos. Now if we could just get a video of this post broadcast on TV and re-recorded and posted on YouTube… The first bit is an Apple iPhone commercial and the second is Steven Colbert on The Colbert Report, both showcasing the skateboarding bulldog. Watch the vid after the jump.
Allergic to skateboarding in commercials
Your kids can overcome their allergy problems using Children’s Claritin, without making them jittery or drowsy. Must not be any good for making meth either. As always, if you can identify the rider or the skatepark, please leave it in the comments. Watch the commercial after the jump.
John from Cincinnati
Any series that features Joe Strummer (and the Mescaleros) singing over the opening credits has already got a leg up in my book. In this case, HBO’s John from Cincinnati uses Johnny Appleseed from the album Global A Go-go. Why do we care? Because the same credits also feature some skateboard footage and one of the actors is sponsored am Greyson Fletcher, son of famous surfer Christian Fletcher. You can watch the nicely done credits and see a little ancillary skateboarding from the show after the jump. Bonus: Guess which local Portland skate company scored product placement?
Adding insult (and a fine) to injury
No, the guy in the bottom left picture is not a rabid Adam Ant fan going through a Prince Charming phase, it’s Toronto skateboarder Ben Davis after he got hit by a car while skateboarding in the street. A security camera caught the whole thing on tape, and City News reported on it. The street is supposed to be one that gets a lot of foot, bicycle and skateboard traffic. It’s not a major artery, and some residents even want it closed to automobile traffic all together. It’s not shocking that Ben got hit by a car, after all, he was in the middle of the street going against traffic. The interesting bit here (aside from gawking at the carnage) is the fact that the car driver got off scott free and Ben is the one who got the ticket. Check it out. Tony Hawk plays Speed Racer
When it rains (Tony Hawk) it pours Tony Hawk. ABC’s “Fast Cars & Superstars: Gillette Young Guns Celebrity Race.” premiered last night. I didn’t catch it and it’s not online at ABC.com yet, so I can’t say how much screen time Tony Hawk got, but he is one of the celebrities appearing in the show. Hopefully Tony drives better under the camera than Eddie Griffin. And speaking of Nascar promotions, Tony is also one of the celebrities designing Daytona 500 tickets that fans will ultimately decide whether or not to produce by voting in a poll. I’m guessing this is the last time they have a design contest, because Tony’s is actually one of the better ones. Some of these celebrities either had random small children do the design or spent a grand total of 30 seconds on the whole thing. It’s embarrassing for them, really. The artwork is being auctioned for charity and some of these guys didn’t put any effort into it. Anyway, the Speed Racer reference is just an excuse to post a picture of the new Mach 5 from the upcoming Speed Racer movie. I’ve been waiting for that car all my life. [Photos Clockwise: Tony…
America’s youth out of control. Start panicking now!
Old people and computers mix about as well as old people and skateboards. Utah’s KLS 5 TV news did a story on the nationwide trend of car surfing, or being pulled behind a car on a skateboard. They call it a nationwide phenomenon because they found four (yes, 4!!!) videos of car surfing on YouTube. Better call out the National Guard! Actually, the term “car surfing” refers to climbing out of your car and standing on top while it coasts, but the fact that there are some 700 plus videos of that on Youtube didn’t deter the aged staff of KLS 5 in Salt Lake City Utah from making up their own terminology and declaring it a trend. (Car Surfing Becoming a Dangerous Trend in Utah!) The guy in the top shot is actually wearing a lei while riding to the soundtrack of the Beach Boys Surfin USA. Of course, there is the obligatory Back to the Future reference. The main point of the news piece is to point out how dangerous car surfing is. They even bring in an “injury prevention specialists” to corroborate the obvious. Lei boy wipes out after his so-called friends start pelting him with sports…
Tim Kulas Bowl Redux
Remember the Experiments in backyard maximilism? I misread Tim’s email and it turns out the bowl was in Orlando after all, which is the perfect excuse to bring up two more videos. One is classic local news crew coverage talking about a secret skateboarding society (I kid you not!) and the other is a collage of sessions that starts with Tim Kulas narrating the story of the ramp over Super 8 film footage. In true D.I.Y. fashion, both the Super 8 footage and the news coverage is captured by pointing a video camera at the projected wall and the TV respectively. Watch the videos after the jump, and don’t forget to check out Bowl Surgeon for progress on the new bowl. I’m sure Tim could use some manpower. [Source: Beer City]
Shaun White for American Express
What, no Don’t shred home without it? Err, yeah. Here’s an American Express commercial featuring Shaun White, who needs his credit card to allow him to fly from California to Utah, Canada, Japan and Norway at the drop of a hat. I thought that was what his sponsors were for? Apparently, American Express is trying to tap the demographic for spoiled rich teenagers. Is it just me, or is post-puberty Shaun White starting to look like Howard Stern with red hair? Oh yeah, the gimmick in this commercial is the old skateboarding used as transportation indoors – look at me, I’m radical! Extra points (and $, I’m sure) to Shaun for managing to get a Volcom shirt in the shot as well. Check out the commercial after the jump.
Current edge
Current TV is a “Network” made up of short video segments produced by their own resources as well as those in their community of viewers. I put network in quotes because I’ve never seen the channel or any of it’s shows. It sounds like something you’d read about in Wired magazine. A kind of a hybrid and hopefully higher quality YouTube with quality assurance department. You can even get paid if your content gets aired on TV. What does this grand experiment mean to you? Toyota is sponsoring a channel of “pods” (I wonder what “pods” refers to?) called Current Edge. Right now there are some good skateboarding segments up there, most notably the Texas Sized Ramps which covers the Death Star and Banana Farm, which you may have seen in the likes of Thrasher or some other mainstream rag. The Renegade Concrete pod on Marginal Way in Seattle is just OK, and the one on the Dublin Skate Scene seems a little generic, at least the first 20 seconds do because it craps out abruptly.
