Nostalgia Wars
Now that Disney owns the franchise, Star Wars merchandise is in every… well I guess it’s always been heavily merchandised. Two major skateboard brands in one year though, that’s highly saturated. Now you can put on a pair of Star Wars themed Vans while riding your Star Wars themed skateboard. They made a video commercial to promote it, I don’t know if it’s airing anywhere besides the interwebs, but the best part is all the cameos. In fact, lets list them in the comments, shall we? Just leave the running time and the personality in the comments, one lucky skate-archaeologist will win a free Star Wars themed Skate and Annoy T-shirt, which is to say a regular Skate and Annoy t-shirt that my dog slept on, leaving the impression that a Wookie wore it. Ok, that last bit can be optional. I’ll send you a clean one if you want. You can enter as many times as you want, one cameo per time code, and no repeats please. If somebody is called out already then that person won’t be counted again. The commercial is well enough done, although they probably should have been set in in 1977 or 78 instead…
Death Wish Coffee and The Late Riser
This is a commercial with skateboarding in it that I can get behind. Death Wish Coffee presents The Late Riser. – Thanks to Mezmer for the tip.
Sewa Kroetkov for Lenovo
Sewa Kroetkov for Lenovo computers is the focus of a commercial in Lenovo’s campaign awkwardly titled “Make your DO come true.” On the the DP’s list of things to do, maybe reshoot the 2/3 of the action that resulted in butt shots. I had to look up Sewa Kroetkov because I am an old man whole lives in a cabin in the woods, but he’s a real guy from the Netherlands and not a construct of a creative director’s imagination. The example of Sewa giving up life as an accountant to skateboard for a living seems at odds with Lenovo’s target audience. They’re saying he’s a “doer” and people who “do” use Lenovo notebooks. The unintended message is “Screw a straight job, go skateboarding!” – Thanks to Matthijs for the tip.
Me and My RC
I’ve seen skateboards with logos for all kinds of drinks, including Pepsi, Coke, Mountain Dew and Sobe , but this is the first time I’ve seen an RC Cola skateboard. This particular one made by Super Surfer. They actually molded “Me and My RC” onto the top deck. The Super Surfer imprints on the bottom and trucks are cool as well. I can’t tell if those are plastic trucks or not. The baseplate is metal, but the trucks look like they might be plastic, although I don’t remember plastic trucks showing up until the 90’s. (UPDATE: They are indeed metal trucks.) Maybe this artifact isn’t as old as the seller claims. But then again when was the last time anyone heard the slogan “Me and My RC,” or Royal Crown Cola, come to think of it. UPDATE: Thanks to Daymond Dodge for pictures of his own RC Cola board and KC for the RC Cola TV commercial.
Translucent, colorless, flavorless
Ahhhh, the extent that Nestle will go to trying to sell you horse hooves and cow muscles. It’s called “Bon Parj Jumble” and this commercial is for the Russian market, or at least was done by a Russian agency. Director Alberto Accettulli must like skateboards, as he also directed a commercial for Nike SB. Who knew Michael Cera (above, left) was on the stunt team? – Thanks to David Leclerc for the tip.
Drop into Norms
Little girls intimidating grown men, as seen in a TV commercial for Norms Restaurants in California. The rider is Annika Vrklan. [Source: Hoopla Skateboards]
Stay safe kids
Hey kids, the weekend’s almost here, so I want all you S&A readers to stay safe. We all know that wiping out is no fun, so you have to be prepared just in case. To that end, please watch this Aetna Insurance TV commercial on safety that dates back to 1978. A good helmet and a snazzy set of gloves and pads never goes out of style. Video courtesy of the miraculously-still-allowed-on-youtube Scott Starr. Remember, there’s a key to staying safe and having fun: Never ride in the street, and always whistle a catchy tune.
Lays ups the ante
Lays Deep Ridge potato chips has a commercial running in the Netherlands featuring an ant dropping into some spud vert, attempting some sort of body varial (it’s hard to see exactly what’s going on) and then bailing with a parachute à la Bob Burnquist in the Grand Canyon. (Should that be “à le” for a masculine Bob Burnquist?) – Thanks to Matthijs for the tip. (He says he still can’t get S&A to come up where he lives… Anyone in the Netherlands reading this?)
Champions of Facial Hair
I’ve been told this commercial airs on TV but so far I haven’t seen it. Donny sent me a phone cam capture, and Simon Woodstock found it on YouTube. Ray Barbee in a Just for Men commercial after the jump.
Sonic is not a skateboard
It’s been a while since we’ve seen a new “car-as-skateboard” commercial.” What did people do before the 90’s? That was like the wild west of TV commercials. No, this isn’t a closed circuit, and these are not professional stunt drivers. Yes, your car is a skateboard! Yes, go try this at home! [Source: Motor Trend]
