Celebrity Buzz at NikeSB
There’s a teaser up for an upcoming Paul Rodriguez video at Nike SB. There are a couple of celebrity cameos. I enjoyed seeing Lance Mountain as one of the cops. Ice Cube makes and appearance too. It seems Paul Rodriguez is blowing up (even more). Boston.com says he’s “ramping up” his exposure. They’ve got a short interview with Paul that’s informal and somewhat interesting.
Tony and Bam dress up dolls
Back in June we reported on the Stardolls online Ryan Sheckler dress up doll. It looks like they’ve added Tony Hawk and Bam Margera too. Sheckles must have pitched a fit, because he’s been removed from the site, and hold on, in the short delay since I first found out about the new additions, Tony Hawk has been removed as well, but maybe that’s because his celebrity likeness looked more like the test tube spawn of John McEnroe and Jimmy Carter. Ryan Sheckler dress up doll
Ryan Sheckler is a doll, and I mean literally, or at least virtually. Check out the Ryan Sheckler dress up doll at Stardoll. Sorry about the knee pads, couldn’t resist. Sheckler is the only other skater available, but they do have Dennis Rodman. I still love Dennis Rodman. Yes, I want to gay-marry him. You can even make your own dolls. I tried to make a GVK dress up doll, but all them ended up looking like a very crazy looking girl. – Thanks to Ben Roberts for the tip.
Oversized Rob Dyrdek
Rob dyrdek has an obsession with world records. He’s been goofing around with an oversized skateboard for his MTV show Fantasy Factory. At first I thought this was the same board we featured here back in 2007. In fact, it almost looks smaller than the ones the Michigan enginerds built. The guys who built said they had a possible high profile buyer in line, but weren’t allowed to say who. I looks like the trucks are different for sure. The Michigan model was based on Seismic trucks, this one appears to be more conventional. Still, they don’t show the construction phase, they could have easily swapped out the giant trucks… One thing that is interesting, the references make no mention of “world’s biggest,” just greatest. Remember kids, Swank stared this whole thing. While were at it, Drydek has written a skateboarding movie called Street Dreams that is supposed to be released at an unknown date in 2009. The film is already completed, and stars some familiar names like Rob Dyrdek, Paul Rodriguez Jr., Ryan Sheckler, Compton Ass Terry, and Ryan Dunn. The plot is about a Midwest skateboarder trying to go pro, and all the non-flowing parents, bitchy girlfriends, skate harassment…
Jay Adams fire sale
Jay Adams is selling a Jay Adams SMA deck on eBay. I don’t know if this is/was a production model or a one off. He gives no details on the deck auction except to say he will personalize an autograph if you want. Just looking at the picture makes me feel intimidated into bidding. Less than five hours left. UPDATE: It’s over.
Then and now: Collectable drink cups
That video of Rob Dyrdek eating it pretty hard while dressed up as a Carls Jr mascott has been making the rounds lately. He’s got some promotional drink cups coming out through Carls Jr, who have also made a donation to the Skate Plaza foundation. This is as good an excuse as any to trot out these old 70’s era collectable slurpee skateboard cups from 7-11. [Source: Pitch Engine]
Jake Phelps Fired not fired from Thrasher?
Jake Phelps, editor in chief of Thrasher magazine, was reportedly fired for his comments regarding a list of skaters he banned from the magazine. In the first part of his series “Five Days of Hate,” Phelps repeatedly used homophobic references to describe Frank Hirata, and told viewers of a situation where he threatened the skater. “After yesterday’s random rant from a mad man, HSP decided to terminate Phelps to end this once and for all,” read the caption below a video of Phelps’ parting words to thrashermagazine.com’s viewers. [Photo: Thrasher] (Note: I’m not buying it. I think there’s a high probability it’s a hoax. – K.Ed) Update: Definitely a hoax, although Phelps deserves an academy award for his acting job. – K.Ed
Phelps Comments on his List of Banned Skaters
This week, Thrasher Magazine’s editor in chief, Jake Phelps, is clearing the air on his famous list of five skaters that he permanently banned from the magazine. This week-long feature entitled “Five Days of Hate” details why Benji Galloway, Tony Farmer, Frank Hirata, Choppy Omega, and Billy Pepper were excluded from coverage. Love him or hate him, Phelps is maintaining his reputation as an outspoken and brutally honest figure in the skateboarding community. Will his words expose injustices in skateboarding? Or will he simply go on a slanderous rampage? This week will showcase Phelps in his true form. Above picture taken from thrashermagazine.com
Life imitates art imitating life
Ah, Bart Simpson you old scamp. Skateboarders have a love hate relationship with him. At first it was just great to have you on our side, but like with so many skaters that keep with it over the years, he eventually ended up being branded as a kook, even though to my recollection he only wore a helmet in one episode. Nowadays we, as a skating population are more apt to give him grief for his poor style. However, a new era may have dawned on Bart’s skateboarding hijinks, thanks to the Skatebook. And thanks to Hulu, I don’t have to take the time to digitize it and eventually get kicked off YouTube again. You can watch the whole episode, but they also let you chose your own start and and end points, so you can embed just the segment you want to highlight. Genius.
Tony Hawk HuckJam Gummie Vitamins
You’d be amazed what some companies will send you if you just ask them. For example, the recently released Tony Hawk Gummies, a teen multiple vitamin and mineral supplement. Whether he’s busy shredding the halfpipe, working on his latest video game, touring the country with his Boom Boom HuckJam or making one of his numerous television appearances, skateboarding legend Tony Hawk is first and foremost an athlete. And athletes know the importance of good nutrition. However, most of Tony’s fans are boys ages 8 to 16 – not the most nutritionally conscious group around. So, Tony has joined forces with NBTY, Inc., a leading manufacturer of nutritional supplements and children’s vitamins, and created the Tony Hawk HuckJam brand of vitamins. These chewy “gummy” vitamins, shaped like miniature skateboard decks, skateboard wheels and Tony’s signature hawk skull, provide a good source of 11 vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin C, which bolsters the immune system*, and Vitamin B-12, a major factor in energy metabolism*.
