GX Skate gyro thingy
Man, that kid looks stoked. This is called the GX Skate. I stared at these things in the store for about ten minutes trying to figure out how they worked and what they would do. Then I saw the video and all made sense, until it didn’t make sense after all. Turns out these things are an offshoot of automobile-based toy. Someone thought to themselves, “Hey, skateboards are hot with the kids, lets turn those car toys into skateboards.” The movement is fun to watch, but it doesn’t really corollate physically to a skateboard. – Thanks to Hung Chang for the tip.
Talk to this loser. RIGHT NOW!
I totally spaced this interview I am doing with John Doe Zine. Call 347 633 9578 at 4:30pm Mountain to get in on it. It’s one big party line. You’ll meet dates too. I am a master of self promotion, obviously. Actually, I blame Colin, he was supposed to write up the John Doe interviews story. UPDATE: Well, it’s over now, for better or worse, you can listen to it online at Blog Talk Radio, or catch it after the jump.
Shut up and get rad
Another Powell Ripper tribute, this time in the opening of the Teenage Bottlerockets video for “Skate or Die.” Catch it after the jump. Shut, and get rad, because now it’s time to skate or die.
Reader D.I.Y.: Home made concrete floats
Joesf Heffner, AKA NWeyesk8, sent in some pictures of concrete floats he made to fit the tranny on a new backyard project he’s undertaking. Check ’em out after the jump.
Skate Rock Skateboards
I haven’t seen this many band boards since Punk Rock Skateboards. Remember Punk Rock Skateboards? I mean, the company? They burned bright, and then disappeared. But I digress. DC Jam, home to skate rock bands of legend and today has a new venture called Backstage Skateboards. Check out the lineup: Narcoleptic Youth, JFA, BYO Records Aggression Youth Brigrade, Dr. Strange Records, Teenage Bottle Rockets, Fishbone, Meat Puppets, T.S.O.L., 300 Pounds, Frontside Five, Goverment Issue, DC Jam Records and McRad.
Spot check: NE Portland
Jake Ferranti sent a few shots of a cool spot in NE Portland: I was with a friend roaming the NE portland area when we came upon a couple fun banks. One alongside a yard, homeowner was cool as hell and she let us ride as long as we wanted. It needs edging tho but we made do. Looks fun to me. I can’t believe I’ve never seen this. Yes I can. There are spots like this hidden all over. Don’t ask me, I haven’t been there… yet.
Busy weekend
Contests and events are stacking up this month. Here’s another. If you are in Portland on the 19th, you can celebrate the 33 and a 3rd anniversary of Cal Skate, Portland’s longest running skateshop, which we love, but unfortunately it’s happening ON THE SAME DAY AS THE CONTEST IN AUMSVILLE WE ARE SPONSORING, but I guess that’s not a big deal, is it, Mike? I mean, it’s not like you asked us to sponsor it or anything… and we do love Cal Skate, honestly. Right. Contest in Aumsville. We’re one of the sponsors. Again, I decided to put up a little money for this contest because I’m always ragging on the scene or the city. So put up or shut up, right? It’s easy to complain, but harder to try and make a difference. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to make it to the contest due to a prior engagement. I know, it sounds suspect, but you’re not the boss of me, so I don’t have to explain myself to you. Aumsville Note: DO everyone a favor and don’t bring any alcohol to the skatepark. The city folks seem particularly hung up on that, though maybe they should be worried…
Creepy, weird, and realistic action figure
This is either the absolute best or worst skateboard toy ever. I’m leaning towards best, and I actually want one. New from Action Sports Toys, it’s the Ryan Sheckler action figure. You have to check out the videos to see how cool these things actually are, as far as the, errr, simulation tiny skateboarding goes. I’m not sure where this falls in the hierarchy of fingerboarding. I mean, who is the biggest dork, the guy who spends hours and hours perfecting his fingerboarding technique, or the guy who goes for instant gratification with an almost anamatronic action figure? When I get mine, I’ll let you know. – Thanks to GN for the tip.
Wackyboard of the future
The concept is so out there, I don’t know if it even qualifies as a wacky skateboard anymore. I’d love to see one of these things get built. If it does, you can bet it will show up on Dydreks Fantasy Factory. The LOOP IN looks like an excellent way for someone to get hurt. No brakes! LOOP-IN is a concept transportation system crafted by combining the surfing and the skate facility. The rider can enjoy the ultimate speed on the wheels and can do some surfing acrobatics at the same time. While the wheels can rotate on almost any type of surface, the plate will rotate in its interior independently. It is like pushing by a wave continuously. Initially, the rider will have to acquire the abilities to dominate the control of these wheels on any kind of lands and at the same time learning to keep balance inside the wheels is a must. Therefore, all range of adventure lovers will like the combination of these two sports activities when riding on LOOP-IN. – Thanks to Johnny Lzr for the tip.
