A Thousand Ways to Say No!
I have a half-assed collection of (photos of) “No Skateboarding” signs that I have been accumulating over the years, but I haven’t doe anything with them yet. I accidentally stumbled on MySecuritySigns.com which has a surprisingly wide variety of ways in which you can say no. They also sell signs for skateparks as well, with helmet rules, skate at your own risk, etc… But the adversarial choices are much broader. There’s even a helpful little section on liability. You need more signs.
BSSS Postmortem
Check out the definitive postmortem on Brooklyn Street Skate Spot over at Curb Cut magazine. And that’s the last you see of BSSS here on Skate and Annoy, until the next time I post something about it.
Vintage skate harassment
Original vintage no skateboarding poster on sale at Antikbar. Published by the British Railways Board in 1978, it will set you back £325.00 or about $560. Pretty cool, but not that’s a steep price. There must be a British Railways Board collector’s scene.
I hate music
Never trust anyone over 30. Even old metal heads and socialist punks can turn on you. Billy Bragg has come out against the coalition of skateboarders trying to save (Southbank). You can read about it in the aptly titled “Billy Bragg Is A Knob, Ignore Him And Help Save The Southbank Undercroft,” found on the Void. Another huge surprise, Rob Zombie is allegedly trying to get what must be one of the world’s smallest skateparks torn down, and not becasue he thinks skateboarders deserve a better one. It’s because the park makes too much noise…. Wait, seriously? I say “allegedly” because it’s all hearsay from the Connecticut community web site CTBoom, and they don’t credit any outside sources. They did manage to unearth a 1998 MTV promo video of Rob Zombie and Jamie Foxx skateboarding with the aid of some stunt doubles. So this is the world we live in. You heroes, be they rockers or punkers, will all eventually turn on you. And yes, it’s got too many notes. [Rob Zombie photo: Encyclopedia Metallum ] – Thanks to Shawn Fendick for the tip.
Real skate harassment
I have absolutely no context for this video, but that shouldn’t stop us from making wild speculations. Anybody want to watch a video of a kid with a skatebaord being hit by a cop car? – Thanks to Eric Cherry for the tip
I went to college
A college somewhere in Seattle. Kind of funny that they’d rather bolt on a bunch of chunks of aluminum and spray paint a stencil on this ledge than let someone skate it.
Skateboarding es un crimen
Be sure to have some extra Euros with you when skating in the wrong places in Barcelona, Spain.
Oregon to mandate helmets in contests and demos for all ages?
Oregon Live reporting on an annoying law mandating helmets for anyone under the age of 18 who rides a skateboard or a bike (Seriously, how did our population survive until the new millennia?) is bad enough. But the companion bill leaves the choice out of the hands of adults should they choose to enter a contest or participate in a public demo: Senate Bill 741: Requires person of any age to wear helmet when using bicycle, skateboard, scooter, in-line skates or roller skates when participating in organized exhibition, competition or contest. It’s not a law yet, but has been introduced to the state senate by Chris Edwards. – Thanks to Mac for the tip.
No-va Scotia
Yes, intentionally misspelled. Nova Scotia has draconian skateboard helmet laws affecting riders of all ages. Fines start at $140 and count as traffic violations that auto insurance companies can, and have used to drop coverage for people. Go sign a petition.
