SOTW 5-12-08: Parking garage antics
This weeks Shot of the Week is from an Urbana, Illinois parking garage street skating session circa 1988. The skater has since changed his name, and would probably prefer not to be identified, but we can call him Karl. Notice he has ollied on to the hood of this car via a nice cheat where you place your hand on top of the object and scoop the board up and over as you ollie and once your weight has transferred onto your hand. For those of us who weren’t Natas, that’s how you had to do it back then. No that car doesn’t belong to either myself or Karl. This was a pure dick move that I encouraged Karl to do, and he did it well. The brashness of youth. Check out the full size Shot of the Week.
SOTW 5-5-08: Eric Dressen in 1977
This week’s Shot of the Week comes from the archives of our own Mark Conahan: We were at a permission pool in Montebello, California. I drove. Eric (Dressen) used to hang out with us before he was discovered by Tony Alva. Check out the full frame Shot of the Week
SOTW 4-28-08: The Challenge
This week’s Shot of the Week is from Damienhialation, and it’s called the challenge. Dan told the kids that whoever grinded off his dollar could have it. He’s a giver. Yeah great, but did they get the beer too? I mean, by kids I assume he means freshly turned 21 year olds. Check out the Shot of the Week
SOTW 4-21-08: Chris Nukala – Merdvertisment
I’ve been half heartedly trying to spark some interest in a skateboard print magazine based in the Northwest, something like For the Krew does out of Florida. It would be fun idea, lord knows we have the spots and the talent in this region. Nobody wants to bite on this idea, because print is a pain in ass, and it seems like Concussion is 2/3 Northwest coverage lately anyway. That being said, this week’s Shot of the Week was recently in Concussion as a half page advert for Merde Skateboards, a merdvertisment, if you will. It’s Chris Nukala in his back yard, shot by Michael Goetz of The Skateboard Archives. Way to go Nukala, you’re looking like a star! It’s been pretty amazing to see the local talent in Oregon and Washington come of age since the first good parks were built. Check out the Shot of the Week or see the Merde advert after the jump.
SOTW 4-14-08: Concrete skateparks are sensual
Am I making you feel uncomfortable, err, down there? This is an image of the Lincoln City snake run that I took a couple weeks ago when we had the place virtually all to ourselves. I spent about 20 minutes trying to capture a view of the snake run that would please me, and this is what I came up with. You are looking down at the bottom wall from the very top. I have a similar shot that is less abstract because it isn’t framed as tightly and gives you a better idea of what you are looking at. You can see it after the jump.
SOTW 4-7-08: Bone man in the bone yard
This week’s Shot of the Week is another old one, dating back to 2001. Chris “Bone Man” Swan at the old Pier Park skatepark. I like the way everything is out of focus except for the wheel and shoe, and it’s shot with film. How nice. Bone man doesn’t skate very much these days, but when he does he
SOTW 3-31-08: Eugene Lardizabal
This week’s Shot of the Week is an old photo from around 2000 or 2001. It’s Eugene Lardizabal at the now defunct vert ramp in Beaverton, Oregon. He was all about the vert ramp man. He was a driving force behind a group effort to rent a warehouse in Portland and build a private vert ramp. The project went as far as meeting realtors and looking at potential spaces, but it ultimately went nowhere. Recently I’ve heard unrelated parties with minor rumblings about building a vert ramp in Portland. Eugene moved to Kansas just when things were getting interesting around here. He might have gone back to Canada by now. Oh yeah, this is not a bail. Fingerflip lien to tail. Wahoo! Check it out.
SOTW 3-24-08: Andy Adams
This week’s Shot of the Week is from Michael Goetz at The Skateboard Archives. It features Andy Adams, a Toast rider, on the Burnside bridge in Portland Oregon. You’ve heard of Burnside, right? This concludes our street coverage for 2008. Just kidding. In the full size version I swear you can see Ziggy Stardust hanging out in front of the building in the background. Check out: Shot of the Week 3-24-08
SOTW 3-17-08: Bangalore India
This week’s Shot of the Week is one from Nathan Gray. He took it last year in Bangalore India. If Nathan’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he is involved in the Sour video project we covered recently that documented a historical cultural skate session with skaters from Jordan and Israel that was filmed during the Israeli, Lebanon war/incursion/police action/violation of sovereignty, or whatever you want to call it, of 2006. See the full size version.
SOTW 3-10-08: Crazy Slovenians
This week’s Shot of the Week is comes from Rok Konecnik in Slovenia, home of about 1/4 of my ancestors, where they like to stand around on miniramps with stuffed birds of prey, which is exactly why my grandmother’s family was forced to leave under cover of darkness. Hey! I am Rok, 26 year old skater from slovenia (” Where the fuck is that?” Ask Marek Llitinsky…..) I was wondering if you could do me a favor and give me Marek’s email adress. I am planning a solo mission to Oregon and I guess he could give me some pointers. We are both from the eastern front:)our scene here is blablablabla, so its my dream to go there and make my fucking dreams come true. At least my dreams are possible, imagine if I whished a Ferrari. So there you have it. And he sent me a strange picture to prove he wasn’t a “wannabe” – not that I cared. Normally I wouldn’t post shots of backflip flyout dismounts, but in this case I’ll make an exception in the interest of promoting cultural exchanges. Check it out.
