Separated at birth
Separated at birth: This photo of my old friend Jay taken circa ’85 in suburban Illinois, and this photo of Mike Blake at the North Vancouver Canadian Nationals in 1980. No, not the skaters or the action by any means, but the graffiti for sure. It even takes the hatred a little longer to filter out to the Midwest. Or at least it did before the Interwebs™! Ain’t talkin bout love!
I been to the edge, and there I stood and looked down. You know I lost a lot of friends there baby, I got no time to mess around. So if you want it got to bleed for it baby. John Aguilar sent in this Jeremy Brown photo of his buddy John Veitch grabbing a frontside edger in the bowl at Bellingham Washington. That’s an edger, not an air. I like to toss the old backside edger into a session on a regular basis, but fronstide edgers are courting disaster and not disasters. This is the largest size file he had, so I can’t show you a close up of the wheel on the coping. Love the edger.
X-Court in Arizona
X-Court is where you go to fight Extreme!™ traffic tickets. It’s a weak joke, I know. I found these pics at Dan Hughes’ Northwest Skater site. He’s one traveling, documenting mofo. Doesn’t he know that Arizona is not in the Northwest?
All I want for Christmas
All I want for Christmas is a private bowl like this. Well not exactly like this, but you get the idea. These shots are about a month shy of being two years old. Since then this now complete private spot in Oregon has appeared in print and video too, if I recall correctly. Those walls are deep. I think the trannies are something like 12 feet. Don’t ask me where. It wouldn’t help you anyway, and I was only there as a hanger-on. I think MC has actually ridden it.
Extreme stock photography
I love iStockphoto. I’ve even purchased a couple of pictures for use on Skate and Annoy, non skateboarding pictures, mind you. The big picture on the left came up on a Google alert today, and all it said was “Extreme Skateboarding,” so I had to check. A cursory search for other “Extreme Skateboarding” images brought up 44 inages total, a couple of which were also funny. Funny in that they aren’t very, well, you know, Extreme!™ There’s standing guy on the top right, and my favorite, a kid doing a slide of sorts with his hands planted. In thumbnail view it just looks like an eviscerated torso.. Hold on, that’s not right. The torso is missing, so it’s just a couple of legs and an ass on a skateboard. Wait, the photog has labeled it Headless Skateboarder. Gawd, what a great post I just made.
Santa Ana days
Jason Corley sent in a couple shots of Santa Ana California spots circa 1984: I was just cruising around the site and thought you might appreciate a photo of what was probably the best natural ditch in Orange County back in the day. This is/was Flower Street. Located at the end of Flower Street in Santa Ana, CA. I took this one morning back in 1985. This is what the main section of this amazing ditch looked like. Thing was that it split into a “Y” at one end and further down the ditch maybe 60 yards was a smaller height transition with a long roll in, about 8 feet of flat ground that when coming down the roll in you could carve the smaller bank and then have access to a natural extension that just reached vert. I feel so lucky to have been able to slate this gem from 1983 to around 1987. Santa Ana also was home to the killer Lloyd’s Bank about 1/2 mile away. I also attached a shot of Lloyd’s Bank, the front portion. Not my best trick but I was 13 years old…
Old timey truck drivers and lumberjack convention
Or as Pete Lewis likes to call it: Old fatties skating terribly small skatepark features. Bigger after the jump. Sorry Egbert, you didn’t make the cut.
In the corner pocket
Seth Berg sent in this picture of a Ryan Gray air in the square corner at Tigard. It’s not technically masterful, but it has a certain appeal. Enjoy.
Tigard Snapshots
Some snaps I took at Tigard last week when there were only four people there.
Shortest skatepark opening ever.
Rich from EPM notes: Tigard’s grand opening is at 4:30 on Nov. 8th. Well, the sign says the park is open from sunrise to sunset. We go to daylight savings time on Sunday, Nov. 4th making sunset at approx. 4:45 pm on Nov. 8th. That’s Joesf Heffner working on airing over the dinosaur with nightfall riding his ass in the shot above. It’s a bail though, but this was as good excuse as any to post it. You can see the Photoshop-free version after the jump.
