Woodland Skate Park

Avoid the holiday rush

Even though that hotel sign doesn’t say “pool,” there’s still good skating to be had. We decided to check out the new Woodland Washington skatepark on Saturday because we hadn’t been there, and we thought it was such a nice day that Pier PArk would have been crowded. We weren’t the only ones with that idea. MC has a comic about it and I only got one decent pic, after the jump.

Someone requested more pictures of old dudes splashin’ in bowls. So here is Grover inverted while Gordo carves under him. Not the best of timing but better than nothing.

Boston City Hospital

Volcano Errupts at Boston City Hospital

This spot has to be a mega-bust, if not skate-proofed by now. Boston City Hospital circa ’88. I spent about a week there ( in the city, not the hospital ) while on a road trip. It was a bust then but you could still get a session if you were smart about it. I think they used to mention it in Thrasher every once and while, so I made sure to check it out when I was there. More pics after the jump.

Sky hooks? Who needs 'em?

Sky hooks? Who needs ’em?

I was going to make this kid the annoying kid of the month, but I dug his attitude and homemade board with an 80’s fish shape and no kicktail whatsoever. Completely flat. He rolled into the mouse hole and rode around doing those weird turning airs that come with the skyhooks territory, except he had the home made kind made from an innertube. That’s one of the oldest tricks in the book, and it made me smile. When I looked at pictures I noticed that due to the layout of the park, I almost caught a nice kickflip picture in the background by accident. Check it out after the jump.

Some indoor park in SLC

Some indoor park in SLC

This pic is from a SLC skatepark called Real Ride. I don’t know if it’s still open because this was taken way back in 2002 when I was part of the work crew building a vert ramp for the Olympic Village. You can see a larger full frame version after the jump.

west linn

Skate Forest, Skate.

Late March of 2005. This cat’s name is Forest. See, with a name like Forest, you’re a “cat,” not a “dude.” This was taken on March 31st of 2005, and the park was nearly empty. Supernatural lighting is courtesy of the setting winter sun and a flash. See the whole thing after the jump.

Benihanas rule.

Benihanas rule.

In the same month that grover learned to do these flyout benihanas at Newberg a couple of years ago, not one, but two major skateboarding magazines made fun of them in print. I believe it was Transworld and Thrasher. I used to have them saved but by now the pile has grown so large, it will take forever to find them. Fortunately for Steve, I cut off his head in this picture so nobody will know who he is. Oops! That’s OK. He’ be more embarrassed to be seen wearing a shirt with the logo for that extra heinous surf shop that he used to work for. You can still spot Steve doing these all the time, usually accompanied by a loud outburst designed to draw more attention to himself.

Crappy Paris Eifel Tour Skate shot

Skate Paris, learn to work a camera first please.

Let’s see, maybe 1992 doing the backpack tour through parts of Europe and I took this horribly exposed slide under the Eiffel Tower or La Tour Eiffel as they like to call it in country. In Paris (duh!) we lucked out in arriving at a rare time when the pools underneath the tower were drained, but we felt like jackasses because we neglected to bring our sticks. See the poorly scanned full frame enlargement after the jump.
