Black Market Clash?
Ahhh… Errr… Hmmmm… This isn’t really a new item but it’s just starting to be publicized more. Man, I love the Clash, and you should too. I don’t know where I stand on these new Clash shoes from Globe. Regardless of how you feel about hearing Clash songs in adverts from Levis and Jaguar, they have a right to earn a living and provide for their families. Money can’t be a motivating factor when they are limited to 250 pairs and selling at prices comparable to other Globe offerings, and there’s no mention of any money going to charity or anything, such as the Strummerville Foundation.
CBGB’s Nears the End. Upside? Bad Brains and Underdog
CBGB’s is getting shut down cause they haven’t paid the rent in years. It’s a shame. I’ve got empathy but no sympathy. Enough people seem to have bought their merchandise this decade. In any case, one of the last shows will feature legendary Bad Brains, although the lineup might be less than legendary. Also on the bill is long time skate rock band Underdog. How long time? They were on the first Thrasher Skate Rock. UPDATE: Added a skate shot of Russ from Underdog on the old stuntwood. Also, the Bad Brains lineup is reportedly all originals – HR, Earl, Dr. Know and Darryl!
Six Degrees of Suicidal Tendencies
Updated: Instead of just tipping my hat to EPM’s post on Suicidal Tendencies’ Institutionalized video, I decided to turn it up to 11. The vid caps above are from no less than three four different Institutionalized appearances on video: The straight video, a Beavis and Butthead appearance, a fake live appearance in a club on Miami Vice!, and the video for Institutionalized 93 – the remake. More vid caps and links to the vids after the jump.
Hello St. Louis!
The Didjits did indeed, rock the nation. This was from their only Champaign Illinois appearance after their reunion for the Touch And Go 25th anniversary show. The crowd packed the High Dive even though it was an early show. Instead of the crowd feeling threatened, which was a common occurrence at early Didjits gigs, everyone seemed to be in awe that they were witnessing the Didjits again, on their home turf, and possibly for the last time. This is part one of two installments.
Re-Devo
One good Devo post deserves another. The Wipeouters are described as a reformation of a pre-Devo garage band, although you have to take that with a grain of salt because those guys tend to make up a lot of their historical information. Juice Magazine did a piece on them around 2001, which appears to have been when they peaked. Yesterday’s Devo video got me interested, so I dug up this Wipeouters video for Twist-N-Launch on Youtube, complete with a skateboarding little person.
Freedom of Choice
Classic Devo and classic skateboarding, circa 1980. Maybe the first music video to feature skateboarding if you don’t count Skater Dater. The DVD compilation The Complete Truth About De-Evolution has been out since 2003, so it’s not surprising that this clip turned up on You Tube. Peep it via Earth Patrol Media, who had the good sense to spot this. Yes that’s Stacy Peralta up top. Some other pros are in it as well, but I can’t remember who.
Proud Parents of Skull Baby
The Baby was delivered at The High Dive Hospital in Champaign Illinois on September 16, 2006. Proud parents were seen in the audience shouting themselves hoarse and spraining their wrists attempting to give the sign of Satan. More pics to follow later. I just wanted everyone to know that the show was a success on many levels. This is from the club’s calendar flyer.
Never Trust A Hippie
In keeping with the head/skull theme of the last three posts, here’s a pic of the “Grateful Shred” Matix tour poster. Uggh. Johnny Rotten said “Never trust a hippie” and the Didjits have a song called “One Dead Hippie.” What else is there to say besides we’re grateful Jerry’s dead.
Mama Had A Skull Baby
Praise God The Christmas Fish, I’m headed to see the Didjits again, for second time in one week. This time as I’m hooking up with the band in advance so I should have no problems getting my camera in to what could be the last show… ever. Rumor has it there will be a vert session of old CU skaters thanks to Mike Poor. All I can say is Balls… Fire.
25 Years of Touch and Go. Thanks For Nothing!
Nothing beats traveling 2,000 miles to take a photograph only to be told you can’t bring your camera in and there are no more photo passes available. Never mind that I contacted the label weeks in advance, explaining that I was traveling to Chicago from Portland in order to photograph The Didjits reunion show for an upcoming article in Razorcake Magazine. I wasn’t asking to get for free, I already bought my pass. I just wanted to be sure I could get in with my camera. It’s not like these guys reform with the original (or any) lineup every day. I was told by the Touch and Go employee that I would not need a photo pass to get in with my digital SLR. Getting to the gate I was denied access with the camera. WTF!??!!
