Rusko meets HR Puff N Stuff
These are a few stills from the the video for Rusko track Woo Boost on the Mad Decent label. At first I was prepared to turn this off, and quickly at that, but then it definitely got under my skin and now I could watch it endlessly. Low budget music vids are sometimes the best. Where else ar you going to find marionettes and magic carpet skateboarding? – Thanks to Ryan for the tip.
Bucky & Pink
As a pop star I like Pink even though she tries too hard. Still, I’m not going to buy any of her albums, although my kids (5 and 3) somehow love the song “So What.” These stills are from the video for Raise Your Glass that features Bucky Lasek. It’s not the first time she’s dabbled with skateboarders in music videos. [Source: 76ers]
Mean Jeans: Steve Don’t Party No More
Check out the video for “Steve Don’t Party No More” from Portland’s Mean Jeans. Buy their CD titled “Are you Serious” from the always entertaining Dirtnap Records. – Thanks to Heath and Rick for the tip.
The Five: Miseri Loves Company
Cool title for this inspired surf instrumental by the band The Five out of Brisbane, Australia. Miseri Loves Company is from their 2010 ep titled ‘For Five Nights Only’. The video has schoolyard skateboard footage form the 70’s.
Two Bands, Two Videos
The first is From a band called the Explosion who has the msfortune of being signed to Capitol Records, a company that still just doesn’t fucking get it. For some reason they feel like it’s in the best interest of the band to not allow embedding. Good luck with that one boys, maybe you’ll be one of the few that makes it. So check out the video for Here I Am exclusively on YouTube. After the jump, there’s a video for a Les Savy Five tune called Let’s Get Out Of Here. It’s basically a concept we’ve seen before, video of a skateboarder projected from a moving vehicle. – Thanks to Ryan Mann and Damien C for the tip.
Skateboard Rider by Dave O’Brian
The internet is magic. How esle would I be able to buy some obscure 7″ single from a guy nobody’s ever heard of, or at least remembers. Skateboard Rider was released in 1977 on a German label called Metronome Muzik. Check out the cool Van Halen style lettering. This came out a year before Van Halen’s first album, which sounds like it came from a different planet compared to this. The B-side is called Sunshine in Your Face, and although the view from the awesome cover calls to mind something else on your face, the b-side is absolutely horrible without any skateboard kitsch to fall back on. Skateboard Rider was about $15 delivered, from Deutschland.
Skateboard, Uh ah ah.
Die Skateboard-Welle war schon eine Weile in Deutschland angekommen, als man dem Thema einen deutschen Song gab. In the 70’s there was a German teeny bopper who had some sort of hit song called Skateboard, Uh ah ah. At some point recently he tried to mount a comeback which involved rereleasing the song with new, updated mixes. There’s not much info out there that’s easy to find on this Benny character. For example, iTunes seems to have him confused with a Mexican perfomer of the same name. – Thanks to Spencer Montgomery for the tip. [Source: Skate in the Ramp]
Weezer, Jackass and Salba
I swear Salba must have joined a union or something. It’s like you can’t film a music video with skateboarding unless it features Steve Alba in a pool. Jackass 3 opens today I think. – Thanks to Matt Beasley for the tip.
Not really a miracle
Somebody was questioning the usage of a Smokey Robinson and the Miracles tune for Rion Linderman’s recent video, but it made perfect sense. It was “My Girl” and Rion had just gotten married. Our Dutch office ( Thanks Matthijs ) turned up a picture of Smokey Robinson on an actual skateboard. It’s the cover of Going to a Go-Go, and it dates back to 1965. I can’t find a vinyl copy of this anywhere for less than $38 bucks, but it looks like it’s been released in an expanded edition on CD. Somewhere out there is a garage sale with this record and my name on it. [Source: Flickr]
Old men and the sound of the youth
Two videos, one with a lot of skateboarding, one with about a half a second. The first one is for an Underworld song called Always loved a film. It expands on a concept where old guys act like teenagers. You may remember in 2007 we posted a commercial for something called 118 118 that was pretty much the same deal. It looks like one of the old guys still skates though, he’s not quite as old looking as the rest of them though, but maybe it’s the long hair. I feel like I should know who this guy is. The second is for a defunct outfit called These Animal Men. The song The Sound of the Youth has a great bombastic intro and about 14 frames of a plastic skateboard, in 1994 even. Watch them both, then imagine the first video track playing with the audio soundtrack of the second video. Oh wait, you don’t have to imagine it because I swapped it out myself and uploaded the mashup.
