Wavves: Post Acid
Wavves are a San Diego that depending on who you read, is either a solo project with hired guns, the new sound, or a bunch of noise. Here’s a good place to start. They released the Post Acid single on Green Label Sound, which is a, uhm.. mp3 record label owned by Pepsi via Mountain Dew. Check out the 2010 vid and a 2009 album on Fat Possum with an old-timey looking skate photo on the cover after the jump. – Thanks to Alex I for the tip.
White Girl Wasted
White Girl Wasted by ElleMC, shot on location at Burnside by Dave Hupp. Hip Hop dressed as punk rock. Remember when you used to be able to tell what a band would sound like just by looking at them? I’m not complaining. Shut up old man! Video after the jump.
Kiss of death
Kiss Online reports that some new Kiss flavored skateboards and fingerboards are coming. I know those guys are obviously business savvy enough to flog this dead horse all the way to the bank, but come on guys, where are the permalinks? – Thanks to Andrew Wahl for the tip.
Beastie Boys make some noise
Fortunately, there is some marginal skateboard related footage in here so I can present it here on S&A without making excuses… except I just did. It’s a trailer for the 30 minute extended version of “Fight For Your Right Revisited.” The Beastie Boys have a forthcoming release called Hot Sauce Committee Part Two which is good news but holy shit, watch this trailer! Try to count all the cameos without getting whiplash, I dare you. I don’t want to spoil Neil’s next eBay Watch, but a Beastie Boys deck recently went for a ridiculous amount of money. There’s a buzz already. Er, uhm… check it. Did anyone catch Iggy Pop on American Idol last night?
Sponsor Luv? Skateboard to Hell
Not to be confused with SNA sponsor Weirdo Skateboards, I love the Weirdos. This is the 1979 single for Adulthood / Skateboard To Hell which can be yours if you want to pony up $80.
Toy Division
I don’t do many strictly music posts lately, but this one really appealed to my love of all things postmodern and post-punk. And of course, toys. It’s a recreation of Joy Division’s TV appearance on the BBC show Something Else. Compare it to the real thing after the jump – Thanks to SteveB for the tip. [Source: Kottle.org]
Jogger does Nephicide
So why not have another challenging video? This one from LA’s Jogger, whom I mistook for Portland’s The Joggers, but not because I’d heard any of them before. There’s a payoff beyond the Vato Rat re-issue near the end if you can make it through. [Source: Coilhouse]
Doot Doola Doot Doo Doot Doo!
Nardwuar the Human Serviette had a guest DJ Roger Allen on his radio show to present the history of Skate Rock. It’s was an entertaining show to be sure, but I think Roger confused Skate Rock with music that a lot of skateboarders listen to. He started off on a high note with a soundtrack clip from the 60’s film Skater Dater, and a few good skatesploitation tracks from the 70’s before getting derailed by Led Zepplin, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and a bunch of other bands that certainly were listened to by a lot of the skating population, but can hardly be considered authentic “skate rock,” Bad Brains included. It’s something I’d actually enjoy getting into a scholarly debate about with Allen. It’s a good listen anyway. 80’s centric but bookended by decades on both sides. Check out Nardwuar vs. Roger Allen. I love Nardwuar. – Thanks to Dale Pidlisny for the tip. [Photo: William R. Jans]
Lemmy, the Movie
Playing in Portland right now through the 21st, and elsewhere concurrently and ongoing. Checkout the trailers after the jump or look up screenings in your town on the official site. Looks great, lot’s of interviews with people I like, plus, it’s Lemmy, you know? Even NPR likes him. If you’re hungry for more, The Onion has an interview with the filmmakers.
Metal from Finland
Chris Cole, Jamie Thomas and Tom Asta appear in the Children of Bodom video for Was it Worth it? Can’t find the video anywhere, but I did find a trailer and some stills from the video on Metal from Finland. – Thanks to Boy Ipoh for the tip.
