Re:Board from Brazil, but in L.A.
Re: Board is an exhibit of Brazilian skate art that will be opening in L.A. at the Exhibit A gallery on March 27th. Strange thing is, there’s nothing about it on the gallery web site. Friend of the site Mr Coulter is headed down fro the event due to his affiliation with Uncommon, the iPhone case company with a skateboarding fetish. I dunno. Take some pictures or something, would ya?
NYC Mural Blah blah CNN blah bah controversy
A Sofia Maldonado has a mural up in Times Square, NYC that has made some locals hopping mad, although you wouldn’t be able to guess why if you only saw the part we’re featuring here. Sonia is of Cuban and Puerto Rican descent. She was also involved in a project called Skate My Patria that brought skateboard equipment donations to Cuba in 2009. – Thanks to David Illingworth for the tip
More Brazillian skateparks

SOTW 3-8-10: Luciano Fleck Peixoto
This week’s shot of the week comes all the way from Brazil. Luciano Fleck Peixoto taken by Aalexandre Vianna, and previously published in the Brazilian magazine Cemporcento SKATE back in 2008. That snake run is a DIY project that dates back to 1977. Check out the shot of the week.

Weird old/crappy/cool board of the month: Argentine Fiberglass
One of our Argentine readers (Sure, why not? It’s the Internet!) Is checking out this board on the local Argentine equivalent of eBay. It’s made of fiberglass, don’t ya know? Well in case you didn’t it says so right on the top of the deck. Enlarge-o-rama. – Thanks to Mariano Tolosa Gomez for the pic.
Gee whiz. Pretty, pretty boy. Onward to Managua.
You don’t have to go all the way to… Wal-Mart to buy… Chinese skateboards straight from your skate shop to… Aw hell. I can’t figure out how to spin this. Chip Atkins went on vacation to Nicaragua. I only know one other person who has done that, hail GVK! While in a supermarket in Managua, Chip found a real nice skateboard. That’s not dollars, hombre, thats’s Cordoba. This board costs about $12. And no, the title of this post is not me trying to get a date with Chip, I’m quoting Midwest punk rock circa 1985. Name that band for a noprize. Void where prohibited. Residents of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan are disqualified. Thanks to Chip Atkins for the tip. Hey, he works at a bike shop. In the spirit of the holiday season everyone jump all over him and give him a hard time.
Now I wanna…
This just in from reader John Aguilar who is our Senior Mexico Correspondent, even though he lives in Washington now, Old Mexico City skate spot behind the Modelo Beer brewery, we always had to sweep or scoop out all the plastic bags with dried up glue inside them that the glue sniffers would leave behind… Geez. You’d think the glue sniffers could find a skunky beer keg or some other sketchy fluids dribbling out of the brewery. I guess huffing is a completely different escape from reality. Enlarge-o-rama.
Eu não entendo
Skateboard documentaries are a dime a dozen these days. We’ve seen Dogtown, New York, the UK, Rocco, Duane Peters, pool skating, and many others. What’s missing? Brazil, I guess. Near as I can tell, there’s a pretty slick looking film coming out that documents the scene in Brasil form the 70’s through today. I have to guess because the only thing I can understand are the bits with American pros that are subtitled in Portuguese (I think…) I hope they release this on DVD with English subtitles, because it looks pretty interesting. Besides, you’re a putz if you aren’t interested in broadening your horizons. Check out the trailer for Vida Sobre Rodas, which roughly tranlates to Life About Wheels. – Thanks to Alvaro Fazio for the tip.
Lets get daffy
Bugs bunny used always call everyone a “maroon” in those old Looney Tunes cartoons. It might be an intentional mispronunciation of moron, and less likely to be the other definition, a loud signaling firework, or the descendants of escaped slaves living in a certain part of the West Indies. So, speaking of Bugs, what about Daffy? Along with handstands, the daffy is one of the last remaining truly “old school” tricks to make a comeback. High jumps, excuse me hippie jumps came back, so why not the daffy? I guess there are v-sits and catamarans still out there too. I found this this photo on Skate Curiosidade, a site in a language that I can’t decipher, but I’m going to guess Portuguese? In the enlargement you can see the skatepark above appears to bee in a very tropical location, more so than southern California. Who knows? Plenty of daffy, handstand, and even barrel jumping action at Skate Curiosidade.
