Skateboard! July 1990
I’ve added 27 adverts from the July, 1990 issue of Skateboard! magazine, published in the U.K.. This is the same publication that started in the 70’s – see Issue #10 from 1978. The issue is kind of thin, coming in at 64 pages. Someone paid for a trip to Brazil and so that’s pretty much the only thing in this issue outside of a page of record review and a couple of comics. The quality of the photographs vary, not quite up to the standards of the bigger mags, but on the positive side, it’s packed full of spots you’ve probably never seen before if you don’t live in Brazil. Theres a thoughtful write up of a visit to a local skateboard factory with discussion of trying to meet the quality standards of the USA based companies. Curiously, the skateboard molds were made out of aluminum. Check out the vintage skateboard magazine ads in the July, 1990 issue of Skateboard!
Action Now #1 added to Advert Gallery
The magazine that bummed out a generation of skaters… I’ve added all the adverts from issue #1 of Action Now magazine, labeled as Volume 7, #1 published in August of 1980. It’s a pretty thin issue and only has 30 ads total. In a few issues the magazine gets beefy again, I’ll bet they thought they were going to be able to pull it off… We’re just 47 ads shy of breaking the 1000 mark. Check them out.
Monster Skateboard Magazine Vintage Adverts
I just added 23 ads from the issue #30 of German skateboarding magazine Monster to the Vintage Skatemag Advertisement gallery. It offers a bit if a break from the same old ads you probably saw run in multiple issues of USA based magazines. The content of the magazine is in German, but the ads are mostly in English for some reason. Bi-monthly at the time, this is labeled December 87 / January 88 in the masthead, and includes a 2 page spread on a then 10 year old event, the 1977 World Champions as held by the “World and United States Skateboard Association.” Check it out after the jump. Includes a bonus photo of Christy McNicol.
900 Vintage Skateboard Magazine Adverts
Thanks to longtime reader Will Heespelink who was cleaning out his closets and sent me the August 1987 issue of Transworld. So now there are 900 vintage skateboard magazine adverts in the gallery. Incredibly, with the doubles already posted this came out to exactly 900 and I didn’t have to pad it any. A few of my favorites from this batch include JFA for Kryptonics, Del Mar Skateboard Ranch t-shirts, ol’ Steve Rocco for Vision Street Wear, SLAM! wrist guards, and Radicool!
Wall Ice Cream Skateboard Surfer Trading cards
There’s a new addition to the Skate and Annoy Galleries, Check out these Skateboard Surfer trading cards from Wall Ice Cream, circa 1978. The gallery features the complete set of 20.
Skateboard! #10
91 adverts from Skateboard! magazine #10 ( June 1978 ) brings the total vintage skateboarding magazine adverts in the gallery up to 801! Skateboard! was a UK publication and as such, features some distinctly British ads, companies and slang in addition to the the usual fare from the USA. Half the ads seem to brag about products made in in England, while the other brags bout being made in the USA. Did you know helmets were sometimes called “Bump Hats?” Now you do. Someone in ad sales gave Uniroyal Corp. the hard sell, because they took out two, 2-page spreads in this issue. Check out the gallery.
New Skateboarding in Comic Books Gallery!
Out of my OCD/ADD is born the glory of the Skateboarding in Comic Books gallery. While staring at the large box of comic books I’ve been scanning in preparation for posts, I started having a hard time remembering which ones I had posted already. I also ended up buying a duplicate of a title that already owned. I needed to fix that. You are welcome. Enjoy.
Vintage Skateboard Ad Gallery Breaks 600
I just made almost 70 additions to the Vintage Skateboard Magazine Ads gallery, bringing the total to 617. This last batch is primarily from Skateboarder 1975 V2 N3 and Skateboard World Nov. 1977.
Stickers are For Blockheads
I just added 27 stickers from the collection of Blockhead founder Dave Bergthold to the gallery of Vintage Skateboard Stickers, bring the running total to 541 stickers. The additions are almost entirely Blockhead Skateboards stickers from the 80-90’s. If you’re trying to build your collection, they have some NOS vintage stickers for sale in limited quantities and at NOS vintage prices. You’ll have to pay attention because there are reprints of many old designs, usually in a different size than the original, but the NOS vintage designs are currently at the bottom of the page.
15 new (old) Skate Zines added to the Gallery
We just added 15 new-to-you zines to the 80’s Skatezine Gallery.
