Native Skate Jam demo at Smithsonian
Jim Murphy has organized a Native Skate Jam on a six-foot high half pipe at the the Smithsonian Institution (Potomac Atrium National Museum of the American Indian). The session is on Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5 at 12 and 2 p.m. daily. The skate jam is in support of “Ramp It Up: Skateboard Culture in Native America” that is open through Sept. 13, 2009. Speaking of Ramp it Up, Betsy Gordon sent in some snaps from the exhibit.
Harrisburg, Oregon BCSA contest
The BCSA has teamed up with Team Woodchuck (from Eugene) to help Harrisburg put on there 1st annual skate competition on the fourth. Harrisburg has a big party on the fourth so there will be lots going on in town. I heard there’s also an event going down at a nearby private bowl….
Oregon Trifecta 2009 dates and 2008 wrap up.
The 2009 dates for the 2009 Oregon Trifecta have been up for a while. The big surprise this year is the addition of two extra days of qualifying events, bringing the grand total up to five consecutive days of skateboarding contests. So it’s official, event organizers are definitely trying to kill me! The web site is mum, so I’m not exactly sure why the extra qualifying days have been added. I would have guessed it was to make the big three days shorter, but the schedules posted don’t reflect that. Also very interesting, this year marks a return to Pier Park (!) a fan favorite, and once again it’s an all Oregon event. Qualifiers on August 5th and 6th at West Linn (It’s been a long time…) and Tigard, respectively. The main events are at Lincoln City, Oregon on Friday, August 7th, Tigard, Oregon on Saturday, August 8th and Portland’s Pier Park on Sunday, August 9th. There’s a little over a month to go, so I’ve rounded up 2008 Trifecta coverage from all points, after the jump. If I missed your coverage, let me know and I’ll add it.
Skatopia founder Brewce Martin in critical condition
Skatopia founder Brewce Martin suffered a head trauma when a tire exploded at a tire shop near Skatopia. Updates as we get them after the jump.
Skreech Week: Day 2
Looks like we’ve actually got a full week. I was going to make it a “working week” since I usually don’t post on the weekends, but Addikt Skateboards has ponied up a full seven days of Skreech on the Full Bloom Tour. These shots are from a pool in Central Valley, or maybe the central Valley? Whatevs. Check it out after the jump. UPDATE: Added some bonus detail shots of the pool.
Skreech week on S&A
That’s right, he lived here for a short while, and now he’s gone. He recently returned from an Addikt Skateboards road trip known as the Full Bloom Tour. This is a Jon Yunker photo shot at Frank the Tank’s. Billy Runaway will be doling out one shot a day for the rest of the week, and I hear the rest of them are all pool locations. So, I thought it was “Screech” but apparently it’s “Skreech.” I guess Addikt would know. Now let’s get into an argument about whether this was a footplant or a fastplant. UPDATE: it was a fastplant to fakie, and a make.
SOTW 6-15-09: Kowalski first over the face in Coos Bay
Kevin Kowalski made it over the face wall of the brand new Coos Bay skatepark last Saturday. It was his first time at the park, and this was his second attempt. His new, more aerodynamic haircut must have helped get the extra speed, because he was “booking” as they say, or at least used to say when I was in the eighth grade. That’s one hell of a death box. Thanks to Colin for the photo. Dude, ditch your old iPhone for one of the new ones, I hear the camera is a lot better. With Kowalski blowing up you should be able to afford it. Check out the Shot of the Week.
The Skateboard Film Festival in Seattle
Here’s a couple stills from episode one of a series called Gusto. It features Mark Hubbard and Grindline Skateparks, and will likely be shown Saturday, the 15th at the Skateboard FIlm Festival in Seattle, Washington on August 14-16. You can watch the abruptly ending trailer after the jump. Who is going to make the GVK documentary? I don’t know much about thee festival, like for instance, is it the first one? I do know they have a very nice Worpress theme!
Saturday Night Benefits
Two benefits at opposite ends of the country this Saturday. In Portland there is a benefit bowl contest fro Taylor Appelo who was one of the two (Hey Clay!) skaters in PDX who were jumped by four jocks at a MAX station in Portland. Taylor’s got a broken jaw, missing teeth and a mountain of medical bills. The contest entry fee and the spectator fees all go to the medical bills, plus there’s a pirate’s chest of booty being raffled as part of your entry fee. This is a daytime event. Registration at 3pm, contest at 4pm. Details at the Department. Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, the private facility known as the Warehouse is having a fundraising bash to cover the costs of operation. Skate Rock legends McRad will be playing with a couple other bands and a DJ too, plus food, beer, etc…. Flyers and bonus vid of the Warehouse after the jump.
