Brett Atchley- Portland’s Shining Star
A star emerges outta Portlands Burnside skatepark, how f-ing cool is that? Element is hosting a huge party in Portland at the Mission Theater this Friday night, hosted by Portlands “Golden Boy” Brett Atchley. Details on flyer- courtesy of Element Skateboards. Its worth it to see MyG and The Muska spin records- if your into that sorta thing. Watch Brett’s part and see the whole flyer after the jump.
Cone Chasers- The West Linn Wrap-up Post
When your alarm goes off at 7am, and your waking up to go skateboarding, you sit there for a few seconds- thats when the voice chimes in “ARE YOU CRAZY?” Well, that is the voice I heard when I woke up. Coffee becomes the savior, and so does a peak outside to see bluebird skys. That’s when I get it in gear and drive to the West Linn Skatepark.
Seaside grand opening not rained out after all.
The Skateboard Archives has coverage of the Seaside Oregon skatepark grand opening that many thought was rained out. Apparently, nobody told Benji Galloway that the park was wet. I don’t know how those guys ride wet cement without cracking their skulls. What’s the scoop with the strange miniature brass sculpture sitting in the rain on the deck? Go to the The Skateboard Archives for two pages of photos, including some animated sequences. Hey Seaside! look for some of the Skate and Annoy crew and hangers-on at the Seaside skatepark this Father’s day, June 17th. Hopefully some of our new stickers will be done by then.
A tale of two cities
There were two skateparks grand openings this past weekend, one in Kent Washington and one in Seaside Oregon. We didn’t go to either, but Hughes has some Kent shots on Northwest Skater. Looks like it rained part of the day at least. Gotta love the Pacific Northwest. 176 miles south was the Seaside Oregon park opening. I can’t find any pics from the grand opening, so you’ll have to be content with the conveniently rain-soaked overview shots from the park’s creator Placed to Ride. If you know of any other opening day galleries, leave them in the comments. [Photo: Dan Hughes and Placed to Ride]
Great Rings of Joy! (?)
I had always kind of wondered if this day would come, and it looks like it is finally dawning upon us all. That’s right folks, skateboarding is being considered for the 2012 Olympic Games. Spurred on by the success (success being a relative term of course) the IOC is considering the proposal right now, which would allow our favorite 4 wheel warriors to finally win those real gold medals instead of the cheesy X-shaped ones that they win at the X Games every year. What will the track and field athletes think? Read more after the jump.
Tony Hawk Six Flags demo
Old friend of Skate and Annoy Bob Mechtly sent in these pictures of a Tony Hawk demo at Six Flags. Bob didn’t send any details, but near as I can tell from the color cast of these pictures, the event was held in the late 70’s, probably underwater. But seriously folks! Take my wife, please! Maybe it was just an added attraction, or maybe he was promoting the new Tony Hawk’s Big Spin ride, which would be odd since these shots are from Missouri and the Big Spin is at a different Six Flags in Texas. I love the kid looking in the opposite direction as if to say “I wish I was riding on that roller coaster instead of sitting on my dad’s shoulders watching this carnival sideshow.” Check out the size of that screen. Jeebus, that’s huge!
Battle Ground grand opening:
The Red Badge of Courage
I didn’t get a ton of great shots, but I think I did get heat exhaustion. Anyone who braved the crowds and heat last Saturday for Battle Ground’s grand opening definitely deserves the Red Badge of Courage. That place was packed solid, but you could still get your runs in the bowl while everyone else had their attention focused towards the cradle and deep end. now is as good a time as any to ask if there are any fellow Nikon D-70 shooters out there who are constantly bumping their shutter speed selection dials. I fell victim again but fortunately caught it after a while. Don’t worry, you’ll still get to see action in all it’s blurry glory. Joking aside, this is one serious design flaw with that camera. Anyone? Anyone? Check out the pictures and prepare yourself for the onslaught of teen commentators. [Photos: Left – Unknown rider. Top – Mark Conahan, and Johnny Turgesen] Additional coverage: Dan Hughes has some more pics up at Northwest Skater The Skateboard Archives. Thrasher has good video here.
SAT Question: Street is to Vert as Park Slalom is to?
Annette’s got the hits, and EPM has the park slalom coverage, as well as links to more coverage. First off, I’m surprised that the city of Aumsville agreed to host another contest. Perhaps there is a new administration in this notoriously skater-unfriendly town. Skater-unfriendly? How could that be when practically the only thing in that town is the skatepark? I think they got more than whatthey bargained for. They probably thought they were getting a playground instead of a world class skatepark that attracts traveling skaters. They have been hostile and inflexible towards competitions in the past, ultimately rejecting the Trifecta after two years. Not to mention the predatory behavior of local law enforcement towards visitors from out of town. I actually haven’t been to Aumsville in a long time, but just thinking about it makes me smile. It’s a really fun park. Aumsville locals, how is the surface holding up? i’ve heard it is getting pitted. Aumsville public servants, protect your investment! Star sealing that park annualy before it’s too late. Second point of interest: What is the social hierarchy in slalom skaters? Do the regular slalom skaters dismiss park slalom as a gimmick or fad? Do park slalom…
