Verbal Abuse for your Valentine

The Berkeley, California skatepark will host the rain delayed Day After St Valentines Day Skate Massacre on this Sunday the 22nd of February. That’s a mouthful. Is that vintage hardcore act Verbal Abuse I see on the flyer as well? Yes it is! I’m sure they’ve aged well, like a fine, angry wine. Catch the full, confusing flyer after the jump. – Thanks to Tom from Weirdo for the tip.

Ed Benedict Street Plaza is open

Ed Benedict is still open…

Yeah, we went to the opening day, but it was at the end of a long day after sessioning in the Aumsville/Salem area. Figured it would be a zoo there, and everyone we talked to said it was. We got there about 5:30pm, and it was still packed full of kids. There were a lot of bikes too, but everyone was happy. I did hear some grumbling about the traffic. Miniramp section looks fun. Coping is slick and sticks out a little too far. ALso odd that there is no decks on any of it, but still fun. It seemed like every obstacle had a line of kids waiting to hit it. We heard tales that there were three separate filmers there at the same time, each in a different area of the park. “I can’t wait to come back when there’s nobody here” was a common refrain. And yes, we had a winner from that morning. I was only there for about a half an hour. Nobody was really landing much, and I had to split, but I did get a few snaps. If you’re still hungry, EPM has one shot up so far. UPDATE: EPM has the shots.

Ed Benedict officially open

Ed Benedict OPEN Saturday!

Those of you left still holding your breath can take a giant inhale. Sam from SkateOregon just got off the phone with a real life Portland Parks & Recreation representative who confirmed the fences are coming down, and Ed Benedict is officially open tomorrow, Saturday, February 7th. An formal ceremony may or may not come at a later date. It’s Portland’s first street plaza, so you have to believe there will be some sort of recognition. I wonder if our beleaguered Mayor will attend? Free Cold War 7.75″ Strike deck to the first person to send me photo or video proof of any kickflip variation over the snake river gap! No joke. It has to be new proof, not something poached from when the fences were up. I’ll judge “first” by the order it reaches my inbox. May the best man (probably not old) win! UPDATE: We have a winner. Clip coming soon. – Thanks to Sam for the tip!

Friday T&A on S&A: Oh Ramona – Pinups and Vert

Check out Thrasher’s Rumble in Ramona recap for a liberal dose of scantily clad gals reliving the golden age of pinups and vert skating. That looks like Mark Scott getting in on the “photography club” action.

Lux Interior dies

Bad news for bad people

It’s an even blacker day for the black-hearted. As a long time fan of the Cramps, I was saddened to learn of his death the other day. I had some photos from a Cramps show that I was going to post, but they were pre-digital camera and I can’t seem to find them in a timely manner. The only thing I have to offer instead is some mock ups of a Cramps skateboard that I was unsuccessful in getting the go ahead for manufacturing. The Cramps were still touring, and still putting on blistering live shows. Consider yourself lucky if you got to see one. Lux was a true original. Our thoughts go out to Poison Ivy. P.S. Yeah I know I let Ron Asheton’s recent passing go without remark, but we’re losing guys like this more and more, and I can’t always bring myself to post it. UPDATE: Added a video of the Cramps performing at the Napa State Mental Hospital in 1978. No joke. Plus Human Fly from Ugh, A Music War, and more

Windells

Hey you kids! Get off my quarterpipe!

I did end up finding an advert for one of those old ice boards in a Skateboarder magazine, but I’ve got a few more vintage skateboards on snow contraptions to scan as well. What about snowboards on skate ramps? This is a flyer for Windells upcoming President’s Day weekend camp session with a snowboard on a good sized concrete quarterpipe. They also have skate-only prices for their indoor facilities this camp session. GVK always has fun there, how’s that for a celebrity endorsement? I promise this is the last of the barely-skate related posts for the day. Full flyer and a Grind TV video from a summer skate session after the jump.

zoo bomb night race feb 15th at 9:00 pm

Night racing, hopefully no Night Ranger

There’s another downhill night race put on by the Zoobomb folks in Portland. More info at PDXdownhill as well. Well, not really guys, you’re slacking. It’s February 15th at 9pm in Portland, rain or shine. One of these days (nights, actually) I’m going to check this out. Not this time, as I’ll be in Florida. Full flyer after the jump. – Thanks to Billy the Kid for the tip.

Benton County Skateboard Alliance

BCSA Call for Art

The Benton County Skateboarding Alliance, Inc (BCSA) is putting on the 2nd annual Art & Music Benefit 2009 in March at the Odd Fellows Hall. The BCSA needs art for the show (sale/silent auction). This event is a fundraiser for the new skate bowl addition to the Eric Scott McKinley skatepark in Corvallis. Artists must donate at least 51% of art sales to the skatepark fund. For further information, email the BCSA at bcskateboardingalliance@gmail.com or call 541-829-9005. That bowl in the upper right hand corner is a new one that Dreamland is going to add to the existing Corvallis skatepark, that is as soon as they raise the money. We’re also adding BCSA to our rotating Public Service ad spots in the side bar.

Grind For Life at ASR

Grind For Life events ASR

We don’t have an ASR correspondent this year. Bummer. The skateboard-centric cancer fighting, Grind For Life organization has two events at the ASR show, another installment of the winner take all high ollie contest and the potentially more interesting new event, the Hosoi Jump Ramp Jam. Surprisingly, the GFL-ASR web site has nothing on it but the date and time of the events. I’d like to see a good jump ramp jam for old times’ sake. I sure broke enough boards flailing around on them.

Exit Real World Demo at Windells

Shop Demos, video premiers, and GVK sightings?

The Exit Real World team is doing a demo and premiering a video at Windells Camp near Mt Hood in Oregon. IAlthough you’d be hard pressed to know that if you looked at their web sites. It’s this saturday at 1pm. The park is open from 9 -5, and lately Grover has been going there on saturdays with his offspring and an empty facility. That’s right, I’m blowing it out. Saturdays are a good day for an uncrowded, very uncrowded session at Windells. See you in the foam pit. P.S. I heard Windells was recently featured on an MTV show called True Life, of which I know nothing about. Those darn kids and their loud rock and/or roll.
