Oregon Pre-fecta
As you know, skaters have been trickling into Oregon and hitting the parks in preparation for the 2007 Trifecta. Earth Patrol Media has a collection of shots from the Pre-fecta to get you in the mood. One in particular is a great shot.
Trifecta crowd?
People started showing up for the Oregon Trifecta at the beginning of the week. I ran into Salba (figuratively this time) and Glen Charnoski at Pier Park this afternoon. Damn.
Shaun Waaahite!
So this was going to start as a post about a New York Times article titled Out From the Cold, Snowboarder Tries to Duplicate Success that was basically about how Shaun may be a superstar on the snow, but he’s been a failure on the ramp, at least in terms of his struggle to win the X-Games vert event and be taken seriously as a skateboarder. [Source] That’s a bit of an overstatement really. Does not winning the X-Games makes you a failure? Not in my book, but apparently you’re not even a real skateboarder until you win the X-Games. In ‘Flying Tomato’ now a champ for all seasons, the Boston Herald Quotes Shaun after finally winning one this weekend: “This means the world to me,” choking back tears after his run. “I’ve always wanted to be a skateboarder. I’m finally doing my thing.” Uh yeah. I guess it was emotional for him. We can cut him some slack since he’s doesn’t appear to be nearly as big of a douche bag as the Sheckler, and he’s already paying a penance by not having any control over being constantly referred to as the Flying Tomato. Alternative to the Trifecta – Seaside Jam
If you want to avoid the crowds at the Trifecta this year, but still want a little bit of commotion during your NW Oregon skatepark experience this weekend, consider heading over to Seaside this Saturday for the 3rd annual Skate ‘n Ride Summer JAM. It’s for a good cause.
2007 Albany Oregon Summer contest
I wanted to make sure I got this posted before the mayhem starts this weekend in Oregon. The small home grown scene is equally if not more important as all the high profile events in skateboarding. It’s the small companies, crews and towns that you’ve never heard of that are (-ugh-) keeping it real. In this spirit we bring you Danimal’s coverage of Albany Oregon’s annual Summer contest. Seriously guys, next year, don’t have it on a Wednesday afternoon and we might be able to make it down there. There’s more…
Boring old vert
2007 Dew Tour videos are available from the iTunes Music Store. They have the Panasonic and the Right Guard up so far. You can buy a season pass for $20 which will save you money if you watch more than 10. Vert seems to be in two parts so that could happen. I just finished watching the 2006 final which was a free download. Some really good vert skating. I really enjoyed it.
Great Montana Skate Race
Skate Montana sent in this announcement for the Great Montana Skate Race being held on August 11th in Dillon, home of the figure eight skatepark we mentioned about a year ago. I’m not sure if it qualifies as park slalom or bordercross, but I’ll bet it’s a blast. Old Grover is always trying to start impromptu races around the outside of Oregon’s parks. I’ll bet he’s jonesing for GVK coverage of this event. Dillion links and vid after the jump.
ABC News still hearts skateboarding.
ABC News has a small gallery of pictures from the practice session for the Skateboard Downhill World Championship held on July 11, 2007. Don’t start to whining “That’s not skateboarding, that’s extreme kooks! Wah wah wah!” Yes, it is skateboarding, and before Thrasher Magazine used to make fun of street luge and professional downhill racing, they used to have recurring spotlights where they talked about it in very revered tones. The guy on left has good fashion sense. The guy on the right looks like he’s got the racing suit but without knee pads. Full face helmet? Sure. Downhill in the rain? Count me out. There are some good shots in the gallery if you hold your breath through a couple of unfortunate buttboarding and skeleton pictures. It looks like there are too many disciplines in downhill these days. I would say that’s not skateboarding but my two year old son would disagree. Getty Images photos from ABC News. After you are done looking at the pretty pictures, check out this ABC Wild World of Sports clip featuring the World Championship of Skateboarding from 1976 after the jump.
Great Rings of Joy! (?)
I had always kind of wondered if this day would come, and it looks like it is finally dawning upon us all. That’s right folks, skateboarding is being considered for the 2012 Olympic Games. Spurred on by the success (success being a relative term of course) the IOC is considering the proposal right now, which would allow our favorite 4 wheel warriors to finally win those real gold medals instead of the cheesy X-shaped ones that they win at the X Games every year. What will the track and field athletes think? Read more after the jump.
