Oh Canablah…
That’s right, fully passing off press releases as content here on Skate and Annoy. We’ve got readers in Canada. F-U hosers! Video after the jump. And, oh yeah, this 16 year old kid named Will Cristofaro rides for Control.
Non-reader DIY: Sixside
Scout Magazine out of Vancouver BC has some shots of a Victoria renegade park in progress. From the looks of it, they appear to know how to work the concrete. I hope the press doesn’t blow it for the locals. It’s bad enough that they have to worry about kooks in Oregon posting pictures, let alone local mainstream (alternative) publications. On that note… Uh, this project is in Tennessee. UPDATE: Oops! Forgot the link. Just added it.
Imagining a world without spray paint
The Vancouver Sun reports that a civil suit against a guy who spray painted at a skatepark has resulted in an award of $6400 to the city.
Jersey in Quebec
This is a Dan Mathieu photo of Kevin Cann skating the more or less DIY fueled skatepark in Notre Dame de L’ile Perrot, a small town outside of Montreal, Quebec. Kevin is the guy who made this park happen, with the help of a host of others. Those of you who read my column in Concrete Wave know the story of this park, if not, I’ll be putting up a version of it here, soon.
Don Hartley memorial wheel
Momentum Wheels has released a wheel benefiting the Don Hartley memorial fund. Don was a legendary fixture in the Vancouver BC scene, and he died n July after sustaining a head injury at the also legendary Seylynn snake run in Vancouver. BC Skateboarding has a nice eulogy, including video footage of the Mad Carver, as he was known. Style for miles. He was 52 when he died, and usually wore a helmet when he skated, but didn’t on that particular day.
The Coast and What’s Up
Halifax Canada weekly The Coast, tackled the mounting malaise caused by the Halifax Police departments increasingly draconian enforcement of helmet laws for skateboarders. Whew! That was a mouthful. Sign me up for journalism school. They’ve gone so far as to use undercover police officers in sting operations. The article is aptly titled Skate Free and/or Die. The cover features a very nice Riley Smith shot of Dale Hussey helmetless, doing a proper straight-armed layback air. Nice cover parody of Thrasher, by the way. I guess they normally don’t do the fake cover gimmick. On the right is the now out of date cover of What’s Up!, a monthly newsprint magazine dedicated to covering the music scene in Bellingham Washington. I had no idea there was that big of a music scene there. The skater illustrated is rumored to be ex Lib Tech rider Ryan Williams. Catch the covers after the jump. – Thanks to Greg Baller and John Aguilar for the tips.
Chingaucousy Skatepark – Brampton, Ontario
This is a shot of an amazing looking collection of concrete at Chingaucousy Skatepark in Brampton, Ontario, as designed and constructed by Spectrum Sk8parks. Soak it all in, then watch some video after the jump.
SOTW 4-13-09: Neil Blender, Vancouver 1985
This week’s Shot of the Week comes from Greg Baller, who was actually in a Shot of the Week last year. Greg was a partner in Burly Caps, a company that made… burly recaps for knee pads during the late 80’s and early 90’s. Burly Caps are back again, and the web site has a lot of pictures of vert riding in the Great White North from the same era. Burly Caps are made from UHMW plastic. What? Glad you asked: Ultra High Molecular Weight, much denser than you garden variety caps. Burly Caps, Right? This is Neil Blender in Vancouver BC, as shot by Greg. Neil Blender used to have a web site selling his art online, but he’s since moved his operation to an eBay store. There is still a few hours left to bid on his original painting (alternate version) for cover of the Best of Dinosaur Jr. See the full frame Shot of the Week.
Spot Check: Vancouver B.C. bank
John Aguilar sent in some pictures of a large bank he happened on while doing the tourist thing with his wife in Vancouver B.C..
Sidewalk Skurfing
That’s right, “Skurfing.” This is a short clip from a 1965 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation piece on skateboarding. The reporter interviews a gal who says she had to form a “Sidewalk Skurfing Association” to keep from getting kicked off campus. It’s got lots of Peanuts-esque light jazz piano and the soon to be archetypal reporter flailing on a skateboard. Best line, hands down: Do you think this will be obsolete in time, like the hula hoop? There a short excerpt on YouTube, but to see the whole thing you have to go to the CBC Digital Archives. At the end there is a gratuitous shot of the original skateboarding dog with a dire voiceover about the current skateboard sales trends in major Canadian cities. Love the visual quality of that vintage video tape. It looks like it’s ready to catch fire. – Thanks to Curtis for the tip.
