Some light skating
Andy Shinkage is selling re-issued skateboards turned into household lighting fixtures. They’re wired through the cutouts in the wooden riser pads that allow the board to remain intact without extra holes being drilled. As a wall mount, it’s kind of odd, I think the obvious choice would be to hang it overhead. Another thing you’d need to worry about is what happens if they stop selling LED lights that look like coned out skateboard wheels? 14 year old me would think this was the coolest ever. Adult me thinks it’s interesting. [Source: Technabob ]
We Are Blood Portland Premier
We Are Blood is a film by Ty Evans that celebrates “the universal bond created by the simple act of skateboarding.” In case you’re thinking you’ve heard and seen that before, this is the first skate feature shot in 4K ultra HD. The “massive sound and amazing visuals” were meant to be experienced in a theater. This is not your usual low rent screening of a skate video you might be accustomed to watching in aging arthouses an dingy brew and view theaters. Even Thrasher is impressed. If you can believe it, We are Blood is being screened at the Empirical Theater in the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. We are Blood screens on September 1st in the Empirical Theatre at OMSI (1945 SE Water Ave, Portland) Watch the trailer here.
Skateboard Stencil Art
On the left we have the Street Art Stencil book from OllyStudio published by Lawrence King. It’s less a brief introduction to stencil artists and more a book of actual laser cut stencils you can use to make the artists more famous or get them into trouble. The skateboarding gnome is attributed to Bandit. On the right is a stencil as seen on the Twitter feed of Longboard Girls Crew @longboardgirls. It’s pretty good renegade stencil work but it’s hard to ignore the some obvious signs of Photoshop manipulation. Just look at the repeated patterns on the bottom right. Is the whole thing fake? Even if it is, it’s a good idea. My favorite type of street art is the kind that incorporates some element of the surroundings in the composition instead of just using it as a canvas. – Thanks to MC and @philosophersk8r for the tip.
Glass Skateboard Deck
If an artist or craftsman also happens to be a skateboarder, chances are they will eventually get around to making a skateboard in their chosen medium, as is the case with Nanda Soderberg. These glass skateboard decks are from an Instagram feed. I believe this is the third glass skateboard deck iteration we’ve posted. (See 1, 2) – thanks to Josh Rodenberg for the tip.
Prisma Guitars
Here’s more guitars made from used skateboards, this time from Prisma Guitars. These are more common now, but Prisma looks like they’ve taken the craftsmanship up a level. I was going to hassle Nick Pourfard about showing no love for bass players, but he can do them, and has done them for Steve Harris of Iron Maiden no less. Even if you don’t like Iron Maiden you should check out Iron Maiden: Flight 666. Those guys are surprisingly down to earth and funny. It almost made me want to listen to their music, but it definitely left with respect for them as human beings.
Anri carving Girl
You’re looking at a hand carved figure of a girl riding a skateboard, or at least, sitting on it while breaking in some new bowling shoes. It dates back to an undetermined point in the 70’s, and was carved for the highly collected Swiss company called Anri. Actually, it’s hard to tell where the company is located. There’s no address listed anywhere, and the history page talk of the Swiss Alps and a region of Austria-Hungary that was annexed by Italy. So maybe it’s Italian. The ANRI history goes back to 1919, so that might explain why this carving sold for $65.
Skateboarding Animals by Giuse Modica
These animals riding skateboards are illustrated by a fellow named Guise. Sure, they lack the naive appeal of Schmetz Petz, but look at that technique! [Source: WhatAnArt via Juxtapoz] – Thanks to MC for the tip.
Sit on it Potsie (part 2)
A felt covered skateboard that double as the back for your office chair. Spend your coffee break taking a few runs through the cube farm. Pure silly. Pure fun. Mobilité is a collaboration between Tim Defleur and Benjamin Helle. [Source: DesignBoom] – Thanks to MC for the tip.
