Skate Fails from Apparatu
Skate Fails are a collaboration between Alex Trochut & Xavier Mañosa that can be found over at Apparatu. The collection features decks that look like they are made out of spilled paint or decks that have somehow been melted and made pliable. How do they achieve this effect? They are ceramic. The trucks look real, but some of those wheels might be ceramic as well. Skateboard art is… a mixed bag in general. The skateboarding public in general seems to have lower expectations for what qualifies as “art.” It’s nice to see someone fully execute a concept. I like several of these pieces, in particular, I’d love to have that red one hanging up on my wall. – Thanks to Michel Skart Poulin for the tip.
Skatebot from Chris Dyer
Chris Dyer AKA Positive Creations made this giant robot sculpture out of skateboards. I was going to say it was transformer-esque but it’s more like one of those hydraulic humanoid lifts from Aliens. I’m sure there’s a name for that genre of sci-fi machinery, but I’m not young and or cool/nerdy to know the term. Photos via Yannick Malek on Chris Dyer’s facebook page. One large pic after the jump for those of you would be hipsters that “don’t do” Facebook. – Thanks to Greg Baller for the tip.
Mike Leavitt
Among other things, Mike Leavitt makes action figure sculptures of artsy fartsy types, including a few skateboarders like Jason Lee and Neckface. When we last checked in on Leavitt, it was in regards to the Gonz. Joining Mr Gonzales today are Jason Lee and Neckface. – Thanks to Boy Ipoh for tip.
Quadruple A
Stands for Artisphere in AAA magazine. I’d leave at a link to the article, but they won’t let you read it unless you are in the right zip code, and I’ve tried some logical guesses, but apparently there is some advantage to not letting people read something just because they don’t live near there. Sheesh, what a misguided strategy. You can still read it if you really want to look beyond CSS tricks, or you can read it here after the jump. Artisphere is the joint that had the Skateboard Side Effects show. The image above is Lia Halloran’s Dark Skate Backyard. She’s got a body of these long exposure with light trails made by skateboarders that I swore was on S&A somewhere before, but I can’t find it. – Thanks to Andrew Wahl for the tip.
Above Coping Benefit
Benefit for Above Coping December 3rd at Epic Skate in Portland. benefit and art exhibit…. oh no. I need to make some “art” ASAP.
Sculpt or die
Ehren Bienert is a sculptor who used to work for McFarlane Toys. He’s also a skater, and for the past three years or so he’s been sculpting some skateboarding personalities. His work is pretty amazing. He even makes the boards himself. He sculpts them in wax first, and makes a mold for a plastic resin cast. Check out Sculpt or Die. – Thanks to Heath Berg for the tip.
Skull
At the end old Space Ghost Coast to Coast episode they always had a split second production company tag for Williams Street that consisted of some people yelling “skull” with the reverb turned up and no explanation whatsoever. Beto Janz makes these skulls out of old skateboards, and they look pretty damned cool. It’s a project for Ultraseries Skate in Brazil. Nils Inne recycles too
We’ve seen a lot of the same items tat Nils Inne makes out of recycled skateboards done before, like slingshots, sandals, but here’s at least one new one, a steadicam mount. Nils’ unique and consistent style makes his works stand out. Check it out L’atelier de Nils. [Source: Sk8.net]
iPhone 4 cases made from recycled skateboards
Official recycled skateboard jewelry sponsor of Skate and Annoy, Maple XO announced limited edition iphone 4 cases made from recycled skateboards. They are pre-release right now, you can sign up to be notified when they are available. Lindsay is doing a lot over there actually. She’s got another collaboration with going with a guy who makes really high end bicycle fenders made out of wood, and in this case, laminated skateboard laminates turned on their side. Check out Maple XO.
Skate Statue or…
My old friend Evil Tom sent me this link which he subtitled “Why adults should not portray teenagers in their art.” “Fledgling” – All of us feel, or have felt, the awful and wonderful growth of this pre-teen skateboarder. Small wings on his back, he wants to fly yet is not ready to soar. Is he slouching to defy, to define himself, or to bear the weight of wings getting larger every day? Installed in downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin, this life size standing bronze figure reminds us young citizens need community support. Well, at least his heart is in the right place, although I’m worried about his heart on. I’m bummed out at our Wisconsin readers. This tip came from a guy living in Michigan!
