Brooklyn Street Benefit Redux
What a difference a day makes; Some more information, a new flyer, and now the beer is free. This Brooklyn Benefit will be to help fund a new miniramp section behind the back 4ft pocket to the sidewalk in the asphalt section. We want to try and raise $3,000, and although it will take a few of these fundraisers, donating (suggested) $8 will help BSSS get their faster! Please remember 21+, none of us want to be the asshole that has to turn you away. Brooklyn Street Skate Spot is now going to be under Skaters for Portland Skateparks non-profit status which will make it easier for funding and accepting other donations!
Brooklyn Street Benefit
Brooklyn Street Skate Spot Benefit on February 18th at Commonwealth, just about a week shy of Commonwealth’s 1 year anniversary. The BSSS benefit is from 7-10, with alleged bands (who?) raffles, food and beer. OK, I’m not going to argue. Flyer and video from Commonwealth’s grand opening after the jump.
Bunside News
Two things. Grover made a commercial for kids skate camp (in progress this week, not too late to show up!) and a press release announcing Burnside’s official 503c status as a non-profit, at long last.
Burnside: It’s for the kids, man.
Like the flyer says, bring your kids to Burnside next week(!) for lessons in skateboarding and etiquette (See potty mouth prevention.) What about a litter seminar? A little birdy told me Burnside finally has 501(c)(3) status.
Board Rescue auction
The skateboards from the Board Rescue show are up for auction on ebay. There’s no shortage of good causes these days, but you can’t go wrong with Board Rescue. SOme of the names associated with these boards go for big money on ebay when they are just old production decks, let alone one-off original art pieces. Up top: Board art by friend of the site Judi Oyama.

Dyrdek Foundation forks it over
A lot of talk recently about the X-treme sports television contest industry giving back to the community in the form of permanent skate facilities instead of building temporary throw away parks. The Rob Dyrdek Foundation and Street League Skateboarding series is kicking in: Newark, NJ – August 24, 2011 – Mayor Cory A. Booker, Members of the Newark Municipal Council, Devils Arena Chairman Jeff Vanderbeek and world-record holding professional skateboarder Rob Dyrdek will hold a press conference to announce a $110,000 donation from the Rob Dyrdek Foundation to the City of Newark that will enable construction of a new skateboard facility at Hayes Park East, on Thursday, August 25, at 11a.m., at the Prudential Center at 165 Mulberry Street. To be fair, $50,000 of that donation is “design services” which is bullshit. Any good design-build firm will include the the design for a nominal cost if not free. It’s only “valuable” when you get into companies that don’t build their own parks or situations where state laws (Like in Washington) don’t allow the same firm to design and build the park. 35K is in donated obstacles from this years tour which leaves 25k as an actual cash donation and not…
Fallout
Reported on PDX Downhill, Eric Nagle, a Federal attorney in Portland Oregon made a presentation tonight advocating making skateboarding illegal in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Portland, a wealthy area in the hills where the Zoobomb happens. If you’re not a local, Zoobomb is a essentially a free for all weekly-ish downhill event that is mainly a bicycle driven, but has a fair amount of skateboarders too. (At this point in the post I need to mention that I’ve never actually been to one.) I’ve always been surprised that the neighbors didn’t organize against it, and now at long last it appears the honeymoon is over: He (Nagle) repeatedly referred to the recent bans on skating in Laguna Beach CA, Malibu CA, and Newport Oregon as examples of the type of laws that Portland needs to enact and constantly referred to the fact that the current hard-won skating law in Portland was only passed by a 3-2 vote. Part of what makes Zoobomb a success is the fact that public transportation via light rail operates like a ski lift. Not content to just ban skateboarding, Nagle allegedly wants to shut down the Zoo Max (train) station in evenings and pepper…
Help Marginal Way DIY park get 25k
…and all you lose is a little Facebook anonymity. Seriously, I almost wasn’t going to do it because you have to grant the Pepsi app access to your wall and a bunch of other info. You can bypass Facebook and register with the Pepsi site to vote as well. What’s all this voting? it’s another installment of Refresh Everything where people vote on which ideas to fund. This whole thing used to be a innocuous way for Pepsi to promote their name and do some good will until the corporate archdemons at Pepsi figured out a way to let you “power vote” by entering special codes found in bottle caps of certain Pepsi products. Scumbags…. But seriously folks, the cause is good. Vote now to help get money for Marginal Way DIY park in Seattle. The video is amusing. It’s hard to be angry around cute kids and a Desmond Dekker soundtrack.
