Sweet Cheeks
Bali Batik Boyshort from Sweet Cheeks, a company that isn’t designed to give dudes a reason to photograph girls in their underwear, it’s run by two time Olympic medalist snowboarder Hannah Teter. Sure, you may have seen her in a Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, but she’s also a social activist. At least 40% of each panty sold by Sweet Cheeks is given to charity. Above, that’s Burton team rider Gabi Viteri. Sweet Cheeks is based in Portland BTW. – Thanks to Joey for the tip.
Nash ad repro benefits Above Coping
A while ago I screen printed a reproduction of a Nash Park Rider advert from a 70’s era comic book for the purpose of donating them to an Above Coping benefit. These remaining artist proofs are available online through Above Coping for $15 postage paid, although you’re welcome to kick in extra cash if you want because all proceeds benefit Above coping. Buy yours here.
Brooklyn Street Skate Spot RIP
Brooklyn Street Skate Spot has known since inception that it’s days were numbered. Even when it went from a renegade pour to an officially permitted project (in a very short time) The Portland to Milwaukee (Oregon) Light rail project was always looming in the murky, but not too distant future. To make room for the expanded rail commuter service connecting Portland to the suburbs, the property on either side of the rails is expanding, and the pedestrian bridge has to come down. You might be able to fight a road, but you can’t fight the railroad. This means BSSS will be destroyed in the process. In talks with the city and construction company, tentative plans allowed for only partial destruction of BSSS during the removal of the pedestrian bridge. Unfortunately, circumstances have changed. Tony Hawk Foundation in Detroit
Here’s another video about the Detroit’s Ride It sculpture park, this one from the Tony Hawk Foundation, that just raised another 25k for the project. Portland’s own Evergreen Skateparks is there working on it.
Hawk Foundation donates 30k to Detroit DIY project
The Tony Hawk Foundation donated $30,000 to expand the building efforts of Ride It Sculpture Park, located in the wild, wild Midwest of the urban Detroit wasteland. Powerhouse Productions started the original product. I’m sure my friends are sick of hearing me say this, but I swear if I didn’t have kids and a mortgage, I’d move to Detroit. A man could reinvent himself there. [Source: Evergreen Skateparks]
Nash Park Rider advert repro
I made some 7 color, screen printed reproductions of an advert for Nash skateboards Park Rider model. These ads appeared in comic books around 1978. I thought I had posted my copy here, but I must have been thinking of this old Bullwinkle ad instead. The idea of printing these has been in the back of my mind for a long time. I went as far as working on the separation file before sitting on it for a year. Earlier this week I got it in my head that I should try to crank these out in time for the Above Coping art show benefit at Commonwealth Skateboarding in Portland tonight. On Tuesday I called RC Screen Shop, luckily they had four screens stretched that the original buyer never picked up. They were large enough that I could burn two colors side by side on one screen, so I decided to go for it. After a few sweaty late evenings (cutting it down to the wire) I have a finished print run. If you buy one at Commonwealth, all the proceeds will go directly to Above Coping. Original advert and more after the jump.
The “O” is for re-OPEN
Big O is officially “open” for skateboarding again, after a two year absence. What was going on for two years? A new soccer stadium was being built, and the spot was supposed to be demoed with the old stadium. The community saved it by raising the money to have it physically dug up and relocated. It sounds absurd, but it’s true. Check it out on Exposé. – Thanks to Kevin for the tip.
