Marginal Way benefit trifecta
“On the third day of Marginal Way benefits, my true love gave to me… Three pool trowels, two coping blocks, and a square yard of rebarred concrete.” That’s right. There are three consecutive days of Marginal Way benefits at three different locations this weekend. Information at the online home of Marginal Way.

Still time to vote!
I almost let this one slip by. L’Oréal Paris has a Women of Worth award. They donate money to the nominee’s causes. In addition, the annual winner will receive a donation of $25,000 to the cause of their choice. In the running this year is Seattle’s Nancy Chang, who is one of the Co-directors of the Skate Like a Girl. So let’s stack the deck and become Nancy-boys. It’s time to vote for Nancy! Voting ends on November 24th. – Thanks to Bobcat for the tip.
Vandalism or community pride?
An anonymous party painted over a graffiti covered bowl in the Corvallis, Oregon skatepark a few weeks ago. It was a solid one color job that covered existing graffiti, including the usual genitalia and swastika nonsense. When the city eventually got around to cleaning it themselves, they were annoyed and/or potentially embarrassed to find that the park users had taken matters into their own hands. They plan on spending an estimated $500 to remove it, an the police are treating it as an act of vandalism. Brilliant! Way to instill a sense of pride and community. I imagine the local activist group, the Benton County Skateboarding Alliance will have something to say about this. I leave it to them to take action, but we’ll report here if anything noteworthy happens. Fight the good fight! – Thanks to Danimal and Joesf for the tip. [Source – Corvallis Gazette-Times]
Missoula Montana Skatepark Association
The Missoula Skatepark Association was instrumental in raising funds for Missoula’s skatepark, but found themselves without a mission once the park was built. So, they changed their name to the Missoula Skatepark Association and they’ve been busy. So far they’ve helped out the towns of Helena and St. Ignatius through grants they received from the Lennox Foundation. Helena currently has a “lackluster park that was built a rollerskating stooge out of Colorado and some local contractors.” St. Ignatius is working on phase II of their design. Phase I was built last summer by Dreamland. [Source: The Missoulian] – Thanks to Prickly Pete Brown for the tip.
Wall of Death killed by Seattle
Seattle keeps tearing them down! Alternatively famous sex advice columnist Dan Savage is covering the death of the “Wall of Death” skate spot online for The Stranger. He’s documenting his correspondence with the city and the bureaucratic responses. Check out the hatefully crude skate stoppers! – Thanks to Adam Shahan for the tip.
BCSA Fundraiser Contest
Shortly before going off his medication, Colin Walsh sent in a couple pics and a short write up about a fundraiser/contest for the Benton County Skate Alliance (B.C.S.A.). The skate shots are decent, Collin. Maybe you should channel your energy in that direction instead of harassing the people that you want to have posting the shots.
SLC Ramp ban temporarily lifted
“Health board blinks, suspends ban on backyard skate ramps.” That’s the title of the article in the Salt Lake Tribune. SLC ramp owners and would-be builders have a six month reprieve while county officials “…study the noise issue, hold more public hearings, then present a new recommendation.” Skaters converged on the Health Board hearing to protest the ban. I especially like one skater’s shirt that read “Skate Utah (just not in your own backyard).” Officials back peddled a bit in public statements, reminding me of a certain situation in Tigard, Or. Things are looking up SLC ramp builders. We’ll check back in six months. Until then, check Skate Utah for any updates. – Thanks to Tito for the tip. [Photo: Adam Barker via Visit Salt Lake]
300th Tony Hawk Foundation donation park opens
Another milestone has been reached. The Wasatch County Skatepark in Heber City, Utah is 300th skatepark to open that has received a donation form the Tony Hawk Foundation. You can read the press release after the jump, or head on over to Skate Utah to see pics of the actual park. It sure looks inviting from the shot above.
