Brooklyn Street Benefit Tonight
All ages benefit show, 8pm tonight the Atristery (4315 SE Division St, Portland, OR) featuring White Fang, Gepetto, Oak Rot and Moth Dust. Door open 7:30pm. Show starts at 8pm. $5-10 suggested donation. If you decide you absolutely have to move obstacles outside of the confines of Brooklyn Street (see above left) – please put it back when you leave. It looks like a blast, but it will not help with public relations and the neighbors.
Discoboard in Eugene
This mirrored discoboard is almost a year old. I spotted it over at YoBeat’s coverage of an old art show benefit for the Eugene skatepark. No word on who the artist was. It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from Eugene. There’s a sobering infographic on the Skaters for Eugene Skateparks web site. There’s about $370,000 in the kitty, but they’re still 400k in the hole. Eugene’s ABC affiliate has a video about the state of the union from last August on their web site. For some reason it takes a few minutes to load after the pre-roll commercial.
Marginal Way auction/benefit…
Marginal Way benefit auction 6-10 at Electric Coffin, 1020 S 1st Ave, Seattle Wa. Like the flier says, Electric Coffin is hosting a benefit art show for Marginal Way. Mob Grip tape has provided sheets of grip tape for artists to paint on and will be sold for no more than $50 buck the night of the event. Plus there will be a raffle including prizes from all the sponsors, Sno con, Foundry, Electric Coffin, Mob Grip, Creature, Independent, Band Vibes, and Spacecraft. Come out and Party and buy some killer art! Got some great artist lined up for the show! Also refreshments will be on hand for the event. In case you don’t know Electric Coffin has moved, still in pioneer square (ish) but now on first down by the stadiums. 1020 1st ave S. So come see the new space (not in a basement).
Brooklyn Street is broke
But man, the results so far look great. There’s a benefit show on October 14th covering a wide range in the musical spectrum. Flyer and bigger pic after the jump.
Save the Turf Update
Not much to add here, except to say, let’s not forget about saving the Turf skatepark. There has been some sort of development regarding the city’s decision to abandon their eminent domain claim on the land. It seems like potentially bad news since the city had planned to donate the land to the cause. I guess this means they won’t own it after all? I don’t know exactly. I wish they’d shed some light on the subject. One thin g I do know, it looks like they will have some fundraising t-shirts soon. Another Here’s funny one though. The local Fox affiliate has a video titled Tony Hawk admits to traveling to Greenfield’s the Turf skatepark., as if he was a presidential candidate who just admitted to some sort of shady dealings.
Friday T&A on S&A: L.O.L.
LOL, you know, Ladies of Longboarding… LOL OMG! Right. The ladies in this case are actual downhill racers. All profits go to fight breast cancer. Ladies, ladies, ladies. That’s right. Ladies of Longboarding. – Thanks to Greg Baller for the tip.
Lents Park skate spot comment opportunity
Lents Park is bounded by SE Steele and SE Holgate, SE 88th and SE 92nd. The skatepark master plan has it at 5000 sq. ft. Take the time to check this out and comment. There is nothing designed yet skate-wise but there is some opposition to a skatespot in this park so there should be equal or more positive comments. View the three concepts proposed for the Lents Park Master Plan and submit your comments by Wednesday, September 15, 5:00 PM. Comment Opportunity Thanks Brian for the heads up.
Free Northport Skatepark
It can be a bit jarring when you leave the friendly confines of the Pacific Northwest and you want to visit a skatepark in another state. All of the sudden you have to worry about whether or not it’s going to be open during school hours and how much it might cost you. The city (village?) of Northport, New York has a new skatepark waiting in the wings and skaters in and around the area are trying to get the city to change their minds about charging a fee to skate. To be fair, you don’t have to pay to skate in public skateparks in most states these days. The East coast may have pioneered the skatepark, but they seem to be having a hard time letting go of the pay-to-play public skatepark. There’s a list of city emails to (respectfully) beseech for a free skatepark experience in Northport over on Sleestak. [Photo: Can’t seem to find the original. Anyone?]
Above Coping on Fuel TV
Portland based Above Coping was featured on Fuel TV’s web site. Where did you get that snazzy shirt MC? Mark did the logo and the board graphic for Michael Montgomery’s model, so it made sense to film a sequence at his bowl. The organization’s founder Heath Berg has written a few things here on S&A, and by golly, I think I’ve seen that Vice President in a few Santa Cruz videos from the golden age. I met Michael at the launch party. He seemed like he had a grip on things. Seeing him in this video makes it clear that he’s had to mature quickly. Vid after the jump.
Skateistan board auction
Still some time to go in this charity auction of art boards. In case you are unfamiliar with Skateistan, it’s basically youth outreach and cultural exchange for some kids in one of the sketchiest part of the world. Peace through skateboarding.
