The skateboard is/is not/ is a toy
It was nominated last year and didn’t get in, but this year the skateboard made it into the National Toy Hall of Fame. Joining it this year were the baby doll and the “stick.” Proponents of the booger and the “doodle” (As in “They can see my doodle!”) were upset, as can be imagined. Tony Hawk appeared in a prerecorded video at the induction ceremony. In his words skateboarding “promotes individualism … artistic expression and it’s also very athletic.” Also, it doesn’t make you go blind if you do it too much. – Thanks to Livmo and Sorenee for the tip. SOTW 11-03-08: Wall rides are back
This week’s Shot of the Week comes to us from Kevin Porterfield, the proprietor of Dokument Skateshop in Salem, Oregon. It was a slow day so they dragged out the launch ramp for some wall ride action in front of the shop. Skater’s name is Travis Jolley. There are some bonus shots after the jump. Don’t forget to check out the full frame Shot of the Week.
Colorado Springs nears completion
I’m thinking of changing the name of this site to “Skatepark Construction Pictures and Annoy.” It’s just a phase, I promise. The Team Pain park in Colorado Springs is getting closer to being done. Check it out on Concrete Disciples.
Sergi Ventura’s Pier Park fetish?
Check out this out of print Sergie Ventura model on Hosoi Skates. I want to say that looks like Pier Park on the bottom of the deck. That’s Sergi at Pier Park during the 2007 Trifecta. Although a crowd favorite, rumor has it (overheard) some of the competitors felt it was was a “jock park” (AKA too burly, required pads) and that’s why it wasn’t on the repeat list for 2008. -Thanks to Greg North for the tip.
One man’s fish pond…
The DIY bowl we’ve been chronicling courtesy of Josef Heffner has neared completion. How near> Near enough to ride, thanks to some pictures from Ryan Hass. There’s still one wedge to be poured. When it’s done, I’ll ask Joesf to recap and and I collect all the links to the past installments.
Buddy Bears
Giant box. Small portion. What else would you expect from a movie theater concession stand. This particular box of gummi bears is several years old, but probably still as fresh as the day it was bought. Engorge or enlarge? Check out the parallel stance on that fat bear. It looks like he’s riding a Techni-Ski. What’s with the target on his shirt?
Vancouver Wa outlaw race on Sunday
Sunday, November 09, 2008 9:00am. 7.4 mile race, rain or shine, course to be announced at the event. Is it downhill? I don’t know. Go to the registration link to find out. So far, there are 34 people entered.
Oregon: Capital of skateboarding (for dogs)
Sherwood, Oregon is about to get “Oregon’s first sporting goods store for dogs.” Err… Does that mean other states already have sporting goods stores for dogs? Aren’t those just called Pet Smart? I guess not. They sell obstacle course setups and skijoring equipment too, but probably not skateboards. To show they are serious, they’ve hired Tilman the skateboarding Bulldog to appear at the grand opening November 1-2. Hold on, who is this Tilman? What happened to Tyson the skateboarding bulldog? I guess Tilman is doing a good job of riding on the coattails of Tyson. Tilman’s last appearance reportedly drew a crowd of 12,000 (?) people. Come on. that’s go to be a typo. People probably thought they were going to see Tyson anyway. I wonder whose dog was named first. They sound too simialr to be a coincidence.
Vandalism or community pride?
An anonymous party painted over a graffiti covered bowl in the Corvallis, Oregon skatepark a few weeks ago. It was a solid one color job that covered existing graffiti, including the usual genitalia and swastika nonsense. When the city eventually got around to cleaning it themselves, they were annoyed and/or potentially embarrassed to find that the park users had taken matters into their own hands. They plan on spending an estimated $500 to remove it, an the police are treating it as an act of vandalism. Brilliant! Way to instill a sense of pride and community. I imagine the local activist group, the Benton County Skateboarding Alliance will have something to say about this. I leave it to them to take action, but we’ll report here if anything noteworthy happens. Fight the good fight! – Thanks to Danimal and Joesf for the tip. [Source – Corvallis Gazette-Times]
SOTW 10-27-08: Burnside Halloween 2007
This week’s Shot of the Week is from Halloween at Burnside last year. I’m not sure if I’m going today, I just don’t have a thing to wear! in any case there’s always last year’s shots, and of course, GVK’s Halloween Hodads. Check out the Shot of the Week.
