THE CROSSFIRES – Santa and the Sidewalk Surfer (1964)
To be honest, I am not a big fan of Christmas songs, but this one is different. THE CROSSFIRES recorded this novelty kinda tune in late 1964. It´s a story about a shopping-mall Santa and a little boy with a huge list of things he wants for Christmas, but listen for yourself.
THE CROSSFIRES were a band led my Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, a.k.a. Flo & Eddie. They changed their name to THE TURTLES in 1965. The song was also released on the TURTLES album “Happy together again – The Turtles` greatest hits” (Sire Records, 1974). On that double-LP the band states that the song was recorded Dec. 1963 and so must be “the first skateboard song ever waxed”, but that´s proven wrong, if you take a look at the original recording sheets printed in the booklet of the Crossfires` “Out of Control” CD. The sheets say recorded Nov 23, 1964.
Merry Christmas!
That “was” out of control. I like it!
Nice one. I can’t believe the band that became the Turtles recorded Santa and the Sidewalk Surfer. “Happy Together” is a great song. There was a punk outfit in the burbs of Chicago that covered it, I thing they were called “God.”

Ha, that’s pretty funny.
