Yeah fair enough – the Hard Ons certainly took their styling cues from the Ramones. But they were always just snotty urban punks born of immigrant families in the Western Suburbs of Sydney – I thought ‘Stairway to Punchbowl’ (one of the suburbs they hailed from) was a hilarious ode to their roots. And they are good blokes too – I met Ray (bass player) one night at a gig and had a beer or two with him, and a mate was friends with Kesh (their first singer/drummer)and again belted down quite a few beers with him on a few occssions. Unpretentious as – I recall Ray fulfilled an ambition with some royalties money by running out and buying the pristine 1970 Holden HG Kingswood he’d always wanted!

Mate, ‘e doesn’t have JB style, ‘e’s from BondI. And on top of Bondi Beach blindness you’ve got Jersey Shore dyslexia… you never wrote “down the basement”, just “down to basement”. Could be worse… the other day, while working on a bowl, I found (after working at it for a while) that I was trying to sharpen a pen with a razor knife….

The Hard Ons really weren’t anything like a Ramones parody. Sorry. But in their day they were a great band! Mach Pelican (Japanese band who moved to Australia)on the other hand were/are complete and utter Ramones imitators and will happily admit it!

I’m with Bondboy66. I’ve always been a fan of the Hard Ons. Since that album with the skateboard on the cover and Girl in the Sweater. (probably quoting that wrong too) Neil! You made fun of me for liking them too, something about heavy metal Ramones rip off!!! I picked up a new Hard Ons release a couple years ago, slightly revised lineup, still good stuff.

Were the Hard-Ons NOT a parody of American cock rock (which, okay, puts them One Step Beyond the Ramones, who were more like a broader parody of NewYork/America)? Did they Not cover a KISS song? And a MoTown song (“And Then [He Kissed Me] I Fucked Her”? And was not some of their appearance an homage to the Ramones’, and their stew in part a parody of the milieu the Ramones came out of? And yep, they were indeed great. But they were definitely a parody of somethin’ (Arabic Arabic Arabic), whereas those other bands just seem to be emulators (and I consider emulators specifically of the Ramones music to be less akin to a parody of them than a send up of their melting pot is). Now, if the Jam had covered a Ramones song, THAT would, to say the least, be a British parody of the Ramones (though you woulda had to hold a gun to Weller’s head).

Frinstance, the Jam could dart out on stage and sing “Girl in the Sweater / Keeps Calling Back” before the Hard Ons came on, but anything they mashed up with a Ramones song would be That’s Just Wrong. (The Eton High School, Eton High School… Etc)
