When I was a courier for Kinko’s, I ran over(accidently)a kid who turned out to be a bike courier. If that wasn’t ironic enough, the cop that arrested me for hit and run said they found me by the impression of the license plate # I left in his skull. Boy was my face red. And his!
When I was a courier in SF I have delivered packages via bicycle, motorcycle, car and even by skateboard. The skateboard always went in conjunction with the car though.
When I was a bike messenger in Boston, there was another messenger who only used a skateboard and the subway (T) for deliveries, and he would usually be pretty close to the bikers’ daily totals on dry days. The problems came with rain or snow. Just relying on the T took his totals down.
When I wasn’t a messenger, my outlook on skateboards in the city was that it was a fun, portable moving sidewalk that I could pick up and take on the bus or T when necessary. It was an indispensable part of my experience there. I never had a car and never felt that I needed one.
