Go Skateboarding Day in Miami
Go Skateboarding Day is here again and if you are one of those people who need an excuse like Go Skateboarding Day to actually skate, you are probably also too lazy to check out the events page on the official Go Skateboarding Day website, so here are the two official events going on in Miami.
The first event (flyer above) is a best trick contest sponsored by Rasa Libre, Independent Trucks, and some sort of promotional blog called I Am Your Villian at MIA Skatepark in Doral.
The second event is an all inclusive ride on the North Miami Beach boardwalk being put on by Grandpa Longboards. A good chance to get some free stuff from a company you have likely never heard of before.
I am going to try and make both events, stay at MIA for an hour or so then head over to North Miami Beach. Hope to see some of you there.
I noticed some rumblings regarding this day. some questioning its origin as well as needing to call a day to remind people to skate. I wonder if it isn’t a bit like april 20 is to people who smoke, just another excuse to partake.
I went skateboarding on “Go Skateboarding Day.” (I made it a point to go skateboarding on that day because it’s out of sorts for grown men to be seen much on skateboards. Think about how you want to laugh out loud when you see grown men riding bmx bikes; the rest of the world has the same reaction when they see us riding skateboards.) So I went to this small fun ditch in a public park where I couldn’t skate the day before (Sunday, presumably don’t-go-skateboarding-day) because it was packed with picnicking families. I decided to come back the next day, appropriately go skateboarding day, and so I arrived about 11am or so.
The ditch is fun because you can skate down it and get pretty good speed and hit some inadvertently skate-friendly obstacles. All in a shady bucolic setting (skatepark designers take note) where you even have to duck down to go under a tree branch. See the ditch at the very end of this h-street homage video, right before hensley shows up in a suit and sunglasses to wave goodbye.

So I went, and to my surprise, there were cars everywhere. Just parked. But no people around. I went to the ditch and walked it to remove any rocks twigs or other debris and then I noticed that there were people around. In their cars, at distant picnic tables. One guy would saunter to the bathroom. Then another guy would and they wouldn’t come out of the bathroom for fifteen minutes. And then I realized there were dudes sauntering through the bushes on the hill pretending to be on a hike. Guys would show up in athletic gear and pretend to stretch and then stand around and pretend to stretch some more.
After a couple of runs, and no other skateboarders showing up, I packed up and went home to skate on the sidewalk. I guess this spot has become something other than a skate spot. Weird.
You mean it was Gay Skateboarding Day?
It’s a good spot and I’ll skate there again with other skaters around. It was just a little uncomfortable. Maybe because of Paranoid Park, that community thinks skaters are out looking for someone to “show them the way..!”
the day before go skate day my friend jesus told me to go skate MIA skatepark with him so i went on GO SKATE DAY and i found out their was a BEST TRICK CONTEST and i just entered and got 1ST place i was stoked and enjoyed my GO SKATE DAY
(But yeah, I got it earlier… the monosyllabic aliteration… but now it’s Gone Skateboarding Day…).
My new bearings are branded “Fags”.
Do not make any conclusion …
