he he. as far as i can remember, ’84 or so, skateboarding has always had ‘scenes,’ but that’s what ‘crews’ are for, so you can skate with people you like. as far as i’m concerned, i don’t really like a lot of skateboarders, but everywhere i go i find skaters i DO like, it’s kinda like life. i think the purity/core that some people like to imagine is as delusional a concept as Jock skater dad’s ambitions. the greatest thing about skateboarding is that you can make it your own, and that’s when it is best.

mc, i think this comic is awesome, i love thinking of these dad’s saying ‘ten more kickflips, THEN you can have your dinner’ i wonder what pros now fall under this child rearing model. there’s gotta be one or two.

I’m laughing! Just skate. It’s fucking fun! So serious on the internet these days!!!

    • Yeah, but just here. Out in the real world, everyone’s just laughy fun, and tolerant of each other, and bikers, and inliners, and longboards…

  • I think jack snaked me at glenhaven once. Haha. Just kidding.

  • Bigger picture, gents. Bigger picture.

  • JakeAndAnnoy

    He’s talking about Grover…

  • Just saying the kid is as likely to become a mega celebrity (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) as any kid playing hoops in the driveway is to become the next Doctor J, or I am to become the next Bill Watterson. Just trying to have a good time here with my doodles and I occasionally get my chops busted.

  • Wow. So, if I dare point out that skating is a jock-fest, I get yelled at, but if I you call out skate-dads, then it’s all good?

Hesh or fresh, Burnside or Beaverton, it’s all the same. Uniforms are uniforms. Groupthink is groupthink. What bugs me the most is the idea that so-called core guys are unique, but anyone outside the mesh-hat/Slayer-tee/black-jeans/Pool/PBR mentality are somehow blowing it?

    IT’S THE SAME FUCKING THING.

I wish it weren’t, and I realize everyone wants to see skating remain in some idealized place of purity. If it’s going to, you’ll need to start calling out the skate-bro status-quo, too.

    • Fitz, please come back to skateboarding and you’ll see its actually pretty tolerant day to day, in the real world with real people, who are just trying to slash a round a little in between all the other BS we all deal with.
Beyond the internets, in actual life with actual skateboarding, I don’t think I ever see anything resembling what you are talking about. Its as pure as you want it to be. In other words, you don’t have to subscribe to any of the commercialization, ‘culture’ or ‘scene’ if you don’t want to. You don’t need me to tell you this but its a piece wood, a toy and we are grown men at play. Who cares? It is silly, ever so silly. Gloriously silly. Why let other silly little men ruin your love affair with the shred stick?

      • I’m sorry, but what? You’re afraid Pete wants to skate with me? Why wouldn’t he want to go skate with his friend?

      • Pete, you’re one of the few people left I want to skate with.

    • A

Fitz,,,, i don’t recall MC “yelling at you.” Don’t be so quick to get all defensive and preachy. We get it. I get it. It’s all a uniform. I agree. Call out whoever you want, just don’t be so militant that you can’t appreciate a good skate comic just because you got in a flame war last week.

      • You know, you’re right. Arguing anything is pointless. Skate culture sucks these days, and it’s not likely going to change.

And where it can’t, I can: It’s rapidly becoming something I couldn’t care less about. I’m happier skating with bikers these days.

I’d say see you around, but I won’t.

        Have fun.

        • What’s “skate culture”? There are so many different kinds of people skating (and biking) at the parks these days that it’s like an anti-culture. Out of all of ’em, the only people that really bug me are clueless little kids on scooters and their equally clueless parents. Dangerous and annoying, they are. I just ride with whoever’s there, and I don’t see any of this skate-bro, uniform, group-think stuff you’re talking about. Maybe I’m just oblivious, and trying to get a session in. Just go skating, man. Don’t worry about all that shit.
