Schiffler Park – Beaverton open house

Beaverton, Oregon voters apparently passed a $100 millilon parks bond recently and Schiffler Park redevelopment is a project that’s coming up. There’s an open house coming up and Chad from Skaters for Public Skateparks points out that the THPRD staff seems more interested in putting in a skatespot than the public does. That can’t be right. Skaters should show up to the Open House and set the record straight.

Public Meeting: Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Fir Grove Elementary School in the library from 6-8 p.m.

  1. Thanks, Mark.

I’ll be heading directly from dentist to the meeting, so I don’t wanna hear excuses

  2. Both plan options for the park upgrade have a small space allocated for a “skate spot”, so likely steet obstacles. They were pretty keen on doing several spots vs. a full scale park at the last meeting.

  3. this skate spot is a great idea and would be great for the community and instead of being in shiffler memorial park, i believe that it should be in either camille park for many reasons,
it is mainly just a soggy wetland. there are many trees there that we could possibly build around for a better looking scene. there is already four tennis courts in the park that are used daily and a play structure.
if it isn’t possible to put it there, another place is behind Harmon swim center.
there is yet again solid open ground with a community garden, and two basketball courts.
the property is owned by THPRD and its a great place for a skate spot or skate park.
i live in this area and there are many skaters who have always dreamed of putting a skate park in close to home. it is difficult, time and money consuming to make constant trips out to the Tigard skate park, Gabriel skate park or any other skate park in the area.
another great use for this is that skateboarders are always getting arrested or kicked out of skate spots. a close local park or spot would not only save building structures and lower the chance of people getting hurt but also provide a save place for skaters to skate.
if it cant be in the locations that i have mentioned i still support the spot in Shiffler memorial park.

  4. you guys missed out – there was sandwiches!

  5. How about a brief meeting report Chad? I couldn’t make this one…
