New skate park for Steamboat Springs

Team Pain recently broke ground on a new concrete skatepark in Steamboat Springs. They are moving fast, and they have to because they could see snow in October, even at lower elevations. I lived in Steamboat for a couple years in early 90’s. One of my fondest memories was arriving there on Halloween, just in time for a party out in the country somewhere, probably Stagecoach or something. At the party there was a barn with a miniramp. One of the guys skating had shaved his entire body (eyebrows too) and was wearing full bondage gear with a codpiece. Suicide Mike was his name, but that’s a different story. When I lived there the city had a crappy little skatepark consisting of a couple of small mediocre ramps and some crappy street obstacles on a slab of concrete. It was smaller and crappier even than their current setup at Howlesen Hill. Howelsen had a ski jump that some Olympic hopefuls used to practice on. I used to see that thing and ponder hitting it on a snowboard. Of course I had no idea people would skateboard these things one day. Before I get back on track here, Team Pain’s own James Hedrick is getting a model on Conspiracy. Get back on track by checking out the construction pics after the jump. Looks like a beauty. If this park had existed when I lived there, I might never have left.

Looks like they are building phase one right now, which consists of the bowled complex on the left side and some portion of the the street course as well. Phase two is scheduled for summer of 2010, though I don’t know if it’s fully funded yet. Alternate renderings of the skatepark can be found at the Steamboat Skatepark Alliance.

    Yeah James!!!

  3. Those pictures are amazing. I know it will look even better filled with concrete but seeing the skeleton of it all is impressive.

  4. Looks like they’re building something a little different from the plan.

  5. Looks realy rad!

Love that they have kept areas unbuilt in the middle!
    Epic!

  6. Grover – you have a poor memory. That park blew chunks. Small, undersized “vert” ramp and an equally small miniramp, plus a slab of concrete and a crappy rail slide and decrepit fun box. It was shite!

On a somewhat related note… I think ground has been broken on the Kelso, WA skatepark. Can anyone confirm?

  8. Team Pain is building the best parks out there right now, and have been for a while. Its too bad that we don’t have any up here (yet).

  9. Rando lets put the park in perspective. It egsisted in a small town with a tiny population,it was metal. and for an era of tiny wheels it was awesome… The only better park was in Boulder… The End…P.S. it was fun…

  10. I share Steve’s soft-on for the old Steamboat skatepark…those were the days mate and great sessions…I try to go back once a year at Christmas and stay in all the posh places we couldn’t afford back then…Grover used to walk around with a walkie-talkie for some job and he would come by and loaf at the snowboard shop all night…

  11. …hey lets see a pic of the old Steamboat crew…

  12. You guys… bullshit. I didn’t say it wasn’t fun. It was just crappy. Don’t let nostalgia cloud your judgement.

  13. …but you made no mention of it being fun, and Jack just called you Negative Ned II.

  14. Fuck yes! That place looks sick. Mostly stoked on the caped fat spine.

    1. I KNOW RIGHT THIS WILL BE FUCKING AWSOME!

  15. Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.
