My friend is going to burst a gasket if I don’t post about this Caustic Defiance/Negative Element split CD release. It seems a Japanese label called Akashic Records has decided to release his 80’s hardcore band’s demo tapes. It happens to everyone doesn’t it? House of Neil and I are still waiting for a very polite call… Caustic Defiance rings a bell, you say? That’s because their promo shot was featured as a Shot of the Week here back in 07. Why Dr. Brad is “up in my grill” about mentioning it here is a bit of a mystery. It’s not like he needs the buzz to get laid or anything. I mean he’s a grown man with a wife and responsible job. Maybe it’s because 80’s skate legends have recently been spotted chatting up his old lady. The CD of C.D. is getting good reviews on PunkNews.org, PunkVinyl.com. You can pick it up at Interpunk.com or preview some tracks on MySpace. Can a Caustic Defiance model on Backstage Skateboards be far behind?

“Observation” quibble: I think the dropping of the “the” was somewhat of an after-the-fact affectation with one of those bands… seemed like everybody called them “the Bad Brains” early on (and they did not go around correcting people on that, just on everything else). Though they certainly sound to have been inspired by pre-Britpunk band Pure Hell, who, like contemporaries Destroy All Monsters, genuinely didn’t have the article. But then, neither did X-Ray Spex or Stiff Little Fingers, in between. So it may not have been so much cyclical, as just things got a little conformist once eighties skaties got involved in the demographic… cuz it does indeed sure seem like articles were too frivolous to be “hardcore”, since I can’t think of ANY exceptions offhand.

Hey thanks for the mention, but did you like the CD? Inquiring Brads need to know! Chop and Barry still skate (they formed 1/2 of CD and Negative Element)and have been playing in various bands throughout the years. The CD is getting radio airplay across the country and also in Canada. Good reviews also from Denmark and Amsterdam. A distributor in Moscow is selling it across Russia and it is also for sale throughout Asia. Brad does a hell of a good job on vocals and is a great skater to boot – he deserves his props! Someone put Brad down in the hardcore history books!

Way to go Caustic Defiance and Negative Element. Skanks for the memories.
Observation: First generation punk band naming conventions: More likely than not, had a “The” at the beginning of the name (i.e. The Clash, The Jam, The Vibrators, The Ramones, etc…) Second generation punk band naming conventions: Drop the “The” and keep it to two words (i.e. Minor Threat, Black Flag, Toxic Reasons, Bad Brains, etc….) Just an observation.

I gave a listen at their myspace and it is definitely 80’s hardcore. I would have probably listened to it when I was a teen in the 80’s, but now it is just too much chaotic noise for me to listen too for long. but I realize a lot of the music I liked as a youth, I can’t really get into anymore. still, a big congrats to Brad.
