SOTW 7-20-09: Cab and the monolith
This week’s Shot of the Week is from Steve Potwin, who captured Steve Caballero on the monolith at San Jose’s Lake Cunningham skatepark. I actually saw this on Caballero’s blog. i still dont think anyones dropped in on it but cab at least got up there to survey the risk. It should be soon, the way those guys are pushing it.
I heard Burnquist stood up there, then thought better… witch is a pretty good indicator of how gnarly it is.

Hawk, Cab and Burquist have all been on top of it, put their tail down and then thought better of it. Somebody will do it sooner or later. I think Hewitt could do it but we can’t ever get him to come up.

Totally doable. If you can get up as high as Cab on the kick-turn and make the return the drop isn’t meaningfully different. The balls part is simply committing to that free fall, i.e. throwing yourself over that waterfall. Once you’re in you’re good to go; there’s plenty of tranny below you.
But what a mindfuck.
Didn’t Burnquist switch kickflip to front 5-0 on one of those rails they extend 6 or 8 feet above the normal coping line on a big vert ramp? He won best trick for it. It might have been X Games a few years ago.
Are you kidding? I can barely ride switch off a curb with confidence. That drop-in can’t possibly compare to the insanity of that Bob trick. But what do I know?

you’re right about how absolutely mind blowing that drop in looks in person. the sad part is, i live about 10 minutes from there and i havent been in months. its the coolest park, but it costs money to get in, requires full pads, and is always 5 degrees hotter and 5mph windier than anywhere else in the town. that kind of takes the casual session out of play.
LP speaketh the truth although I much prefer my home park Potrero. Cunningham: Shit location, no shade, pay to skate and park (only while Raging Waters is open), lame hours, etc. = 1 big production just to skate there.
yeah, in my opinion the SJ park at Roosevelt is more fun. It’s more casual. Dudes who are really good at big vert are really good at Cunningham. I’m a wienie, I guess.
