Concrete information

Boardistan has a video interview with Brian Harper from California Skateparks talking about the cement on wood structure used in the Maloof Money Cup. I sort of assumed they were going with prefab concrete elements, but it looks like they used foam underneath and concrete on top, with no rebar. The concrete can be recycled, and I suppose the foam could be too. I still feel like they should build permanent skateparks and leave them, but that wouldn’t jive with the Maloof Money Cup sponsors and the X-Games need to have large amounts of spectator seating and controlled access by the media.

– Thanks to Brian Baade for the tip.

Editor’s Note 2019: Wow, Flash video… does this plugin even exist anymore. I hope not.

Boardistan operatives also got an amusing video of Pierre Andre getting denied entrance by Maloof security.

  1. I understand but it is still hard to accept.

  2. It’s still lame. Build a permanent park and temporary spectator seating… it don’t take no smarts to figure it out…

Build prefab elements like Kilwag mentions and then move them to a large permanent park, or a small ‘satellite’ park/spot. Hell, stamp sponsor names in the ‘crete, instant perm advertising… goodwill/support of local communities will go a long way. (not to mention the countless number of times the elements will be seen in pro video after video…) For fk sake they could even SELL the damn things to a city wanting to build!!

What, a few thousand ‘physical spectators’ day-of at best? Even more could be accomodated with rented jumbo trons… Compared to millions watching on tv… spectators aren’t an issue, cameras and on-air sponsorship IS…

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE the tv exposure that skating has been getting since ’96 or so. It’s precisely why I have a killer ‘home park.’ But there is no justification for this waste, particularly with participation by skate companies including builders who are older SKATERS who know first hand how important parks are to the skate community…

    I just don’t get it.

  3. Everything he said.
