Skate and Annoy: Daily

Col. Summers Park

Make sure your D.I.Y. isn’t D.O.A.

This D.I.Y. spot in SE Portland only lasted a couple of weeks. The spot had been home to a wooden bench made by skaters for at least a year before this bank went up. The neighborhood reaction was positive, but obviously someone in the City of Portland wasn’t impressed. The builders opted for the “it’s better to ask forgiveness than to ask for permission” tactic, but it didn’t work out, obviously. I applaud the effort, but in this case the location was too ostentatious. Choose your renegade spots wisely kids. In a situation like this (a well used public park, already frequented by skaters) it would be advisable to get it sanctioned first. Write up a nice proposal. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but use a spell checker. Talk about the benefits and address negative concerns. Spin it as a community project. Get a petition signed by neighbors and park users, than take all this to the Parks department. The fact that you aren’t asking for money might help your chances. Stress the small overall size of the obstacle and minimal impact on the surroundings. Good luck!

Thanks to… I’m not telling. That kid in the green shirt is in trouble though.

Working it.

Later that night, looking good!

You can’t skate in flip flops, campus cruising excluded, so that must be an interested onlooker.

  • oh you mean in trouble with the fuzz. i thought he was in trouble for holding the trowel wrong.

We concreted a quarter pipe extension at a local ditch once. Next day we go there some kids destroyed it and wrote their names in the wet cement…lame

  • Accessory: One who incites, aids, or abets a lawbreaker in the commission of a crime but is not present at the time of the crime. Also called accessory before the fact .

  • I’ve imagined prefabbing stuff – with threaded bolts sticking out to attach temporary wheels – then at 2:00AM, towing it in place commando style, removing the wheels, and lowering it down with a car jack. Then you cut the bolts off, and no ones the wiser. If you made it look like art it might even fool a lot of people who would otherwise complain too.

Would be so cool. Of course I would never endorse such an idea unless it were 100% legal.

  • Ewe bedder bee.

  • sorry grammar nazis for the improper usage of the use of “it’s”

  • hey carroll13, don’t let it get you down.

MIdnight Fix-a-Spot (R) (C) (INC) is still alive and well. We’re like hydras, you cut a head off and 2 more will grow in it’s place.

Plan your spot out in advance.

xxxxxxxxx might or might not have a new spot “freed” in Ballard this weekend.

  • Another name for this post is Matt and Mike go to jail.

Hmm..this puts a bit of a damper on my “volunteering” idea in Vancouver I guess.

  • Hahaha, don’t stop writing Bobcat.
    Fuck!

  • i rarely blow out some of the DIY spots but heres one and why.

the lake hills banks out in Bellevue, xxxxx rolled out there and xxxxx sledged out a good 20 long chunk of the curb at the bottom. xxxxxx put the curb bits in the car and we disposed of it well. xxxxxxx came back later with quikcrete and water and fixed the little lip at the bottom. it took (from what “I” heard) about 3 hours total. The spot was a go.

Next fucking week goddamn BMX fuckers ruin the fence it is attached to and the neighbor went rambo. Now if you even sneeze back there he’s on to you. Here’s another fuck: FUCK.

You can see photos of the spot on a certain other website and in many of the videos you freeload off the internets.

  • Oh wow. That sucks for them. We are going through the exact same thing in my town right now, only there are like 10 spots that were made scattered around town. Every spot is hot. It sucks.
