AERO candy bar commercial with bob Burnquist skating baloons

Imitation and flattery, laziness

Aero, a candy bar brand popular in the UK, filmed an commercial spot with Bob Burnquist skating at the Lake Cunningham skate park with the bowls filled with brown balloons to resemble the bubbles in the chocolate. It looks great, trouble is, it’s an exact copy of the same concept that was actually shot here in at Portland’s D.O.S.. Ignorance is going to be hard to claim, considering Apple Computer is currently showing the original video in some of their in-store loops for Apple TV. Of course there is a chance that the originators might be getting paid too. Watch the video after the jump. UPDATE: Added for making of interviews.

– Thanks to Aaron Shims for the tip.

The video is slow to start right now, must be getting lots of traffic. There is supposed to be a “making of” too, as soon as I find it, I’ll post it.

Update: YouTube – Faster loading, extended version.

The making of Aero: Feel the Bubbles. Interviews with the Burnquis and crew.

  • Damn they really limited the balloons for dif. film shots sections. Beach really killed it in his balloon session looked like he had a lot more challenging blind spot tricks. If only it was done first in Cal hookie = contract commercial!
Judgement = Kids asking to fill up the bowl with balloons for eternity. New name Balloon Bowl.

  • Intellectual property is one of the hardest things to protect and secure your rights.. Do some legal research in this field. How deep down the rabbits hole do you want to follow the bubbles!?
Call & Fly in Captain BooYah!! for the monolith
Maby the balloons help break your slam if you eat it on your FS air.

  • I love and support Chris always!

  • aero’s are popular in canada too. i love them and will gladly trade you for some whatchamacallits 😛

as far as the blatant bite. does it surprise anyone really? nothing is new. everything is ABD

  • Prickly Pete

Drop in on that thing and you’ll get arrested.

  • i know steve got up there, i thought ob woulda tried it, somebody will soon!

  • sea cliff vert ramp

bob didn’t drop in on the monolith. bob, cab and hawk have all got on top of it, put their tails down but decided not to try it. they probably didn’t film in the skull bowl because it’s always leaking water in several places.

  • thats a cool vid, i wonder how many balloons are CG. Where’s Eric the Midget? His flight is leaving….

  • We are from Germany, the Land of Chocolate….

  • skaterhusseindave

    Isn’t it Gloop? Augustus Gloop.

  • I like Aero bars…reminds me of my childhood in Canadia.

  • i just want to know if Bob dropped in on the monolith.

He was standing on top it in one of the youtube videos.

  • warehouse

For all you folks wanting an Areo bar, they are readily available in Canada, and they are nothing special.

  • i tried those choco bars back in czech and they are just sub-par shitty chocolate bars filled with air bubbles. its THE GIMMICK if ive ever seen one. it was marketed as “light” candy for people minding their fat asses while still being just shitty chocolate. i felt cheated. you know you can eat just a half of the candy bar if you want eat less candy? not so profitable, huh?

however, i cant believe nobody mentioned so far that nestle was probably whole time aware of the controversy and it definitely did a great job for them. you cant buy this ruckus with money. even im spending too much time on this already. fucking marketers

  • With all the controversy this commercial is getting, Nestle may have to bring those things to the US.

I honestly want to try one now…clever marketing!!!

  • I don’t care wether or not he sold out–everyone does sooner or later.

What I care about is getting my hand on an Aero. I loved those as a kid.

  • Estes' Ghost

Dick Clark would hammer some dough for sure………he’s greedy like Veruca Salts parents.

  • Seems like a good entertainment lawyer could slam dunk a negotiation like this. Get paid guys, you know Nestle would. Doesn’t have to be a lawsuit, doesn’t have to be nasty.

  • So I understand that the idea wasn’t theirs, but it definitely looks really cool.

Something about the way Bob can still make his skating flow really well even in the balloons.

  • A

Augustus Goop, Greedy selfish, nincompoop! My kid was watching that this morning. I am addicted to chocolate. Just call me “Cathy”.. .. Aaaack! Time to go shopping…

As far as the commercial goes… If a film’s director can sue a music label because the music video completely copies certain scenes in a movie (And it has happened..) Then surely the originators of a copyrighted piece of video work have some sort of ownership of the concept when someone recreates the entire concept (and nothing else) for commercial gain.

I’m not advocating law suits, I’m just saying if you are going to make a tv commercial that basically is just a copy of someone esle’s video and not a parody in any way, then you ought expect a lawsuit, or come to an arrangement with the original people who did it. To say it was an “inspiration” kind of candy coats it. An inspiration is used to build upon. the Aero thing is just flat out mimicry.

All that aside, they certainly did execute it well, thanks in part to a big budget.

  • I’d bet he skated it, they just didn’t shoot there…

The originators get no check… it’s an idea… a GREAT idea, and Ty didn’t claim to be the first with it. He gave a shout out to the inspiration. Would you send a check if you filled your bowl with balloons? (Though he should have invited the boys down for a balloon session for reals.)

    I dig it. 100%

  • sea cliff vert ramp

Not surprisingly, he didn’t skate in the skull bowl.

  • Estes' Ghost

Well call me Augustus Goop! I would swim in chocolate if there was a deep enough ‘bath’ of it………I love that stuff too much.

  • The bubbles of Aero chocolate offer an effortless way to enjoy the intensity of pure chocolate pleasure.

    From the Nestle website

  • Oh I cannot believe this guy! What a little hussie! He sure talks like he’s Mr. Health Conscious with his fruit smoothies and hemp undies. And he’s all “I won’t do ads for candy and meat products.” First he signs on for the Dew Tour and now this abomination. He’s just a junk foor junkie. Really! I aint feelin’ your bubbles no more, Bob!
