Hugh Holland

Hugh Holland’s skate photos

Hugh Holland shot a lot of skate photos in the 70’s. There are some great shots online at Lifelounge. The best part was is that they aren’t a subset of the same photos of the era that have been making the rounds for the past decade. Holland came to shoot skaters after already being a photographer. So, aside from the skate photos, a lot of Holland’s shots are taken from more of a photojournalist’s perspective. The Lifelounge post is over a year old. Hugh’s had some exhibits and possibly a catalog from the show published. I can’t find an active official web site for Hugh, and everyone seems to point back to the Lifelounge collection. It’s good stuff. Check it out.

  • You should see his other stuff creepy creeper stuff, what were his intentions?

  • Agreed, good photos. Definitely cool to see different looks at the early Dogtown scene. Would like to see more skating shots of the crew. Where were Alva, Biniak, Shogo, and the rest of the boys, I wonder? Did Stecyk have exclusive rights, or were they shining this Hugh guy for some reason?

  • A

Yeah, I thought some of it was a bit homoerotic, but they are good photos none the less.

  • Yeah, I was definitely wanting more of the wonder twins (or just pool skating shots) and less golden boys.

  • mac I saw your comment before the photos, so you may have influenced my thinking. I’d have to agree with you. but how insanely hot were the two bikini babes in the first photo? good golly, talk about the wonder twins!.

  • Junior Combmeyer

Mac has a good point. I noticed the same trend. I even felt those were the most poignant pictures in a way. Holland treats the body like sculpture, and though his interest in clearly rooted in sexy adolescent boys, he shoots with respect and reverence for the form that follows shredding.

  • Interesting shots, but does it strike anyone else that Hugh seems to have had a particular…shall we say…fondness for shirtless, blonde, skater-boys? I mean, some of the shots and the titles are kind of odd. “Asphalt Angel”? He must have had thousands of shots to choose from, but he picked “Schoolyard Drop” and “Gilded Skater”? I have a pretty good idea what Hugh’s dreams were about. Where are the damn surfer girls, Hugh?

  • Some great shots in there. We should start appending dreams to our shot titles. Trifecta dreams, Benedict Dreams…etc.
