eBay Watch: January 2009

January 2009. The economy might be in the toilet, but you wouldn’t know it on eBay. There were some BIG auctions that went off this month, and a lot of cash thrown around. Maybe it was early tax refunds; maybe it was just a case of right place, right time, but whatever the case, it was an exciting month.

Let me just say something though, something that is really starting to bug me. Sellers, please do a modicum of research before you set your prices. I’m really getting tired of seeing the same decks up, month in month out with the same ridiculous prices. Hello, McFly, your Lance Mountain “family” deck is not going to sell for $200, it doesn’t matter how many times you keep putting it up there. If you did 5 minutes of research you’d see that about 5 family decks went off in the last 2 weeks, all selling in the $50 range. So why you think people are going to pony up 4 times what it’s worth is a freaking mystery. Also, if I see that red Chris Miller “dog” at $500 again I’ll scream. It’s been up for like 3 months. Nobody is going to pay that! To keep putting it up month after month at the same price is plain silly. And another thing while I’m ranting. Can the guy that’s cutting up old magazines and auctioning them off, 1 page at a time kindly stop? Nobody is interested in your piece of crap $9 auctions. We could buy the magazines for that. Just stop. And enough with the deck shaped stickers too. Just stop that shit already.

  • king vince

Someone rode off like a bandit with that Jeff Kendall

  • Love the abrook – I was messaging to Bottlehead the other day.

  • backwardsbernie

Wohoo! Somebody bought one of my boards for $66. Now if I lose my job I know I can sell the two I have and make a cool $120! Guess we won’t lose the house afterall.

If it was a grail somebody would have bought it for that price by now. It’s been up for about 4 months. And last time I checked this wasn’t July. The DOW is down about 1500 points since July. A few million more people are unemployed.

If a deck is going unsold for months, either something is wrong with the deck or something is wrong with the price. Easy as that.

  • The Black Flag decks always remind me of Mrs A’s Surfshop in Portland(on Powell).

I think I went there all of twice, at most, four times…but it was the first actual “skateshop” I ever set foot in.
Granted, it was a “Surf” shop, but even in the floodiest years, Portlanders aren’t carving the swells in the Willamette River.
But there’s streets in Portland, and Mt Tabor… so the real emphasis was on skateboards(although I’m sure they sold a lot of Sex Wax…and from the huge teen pregnancy rates in the 80s, I think Battle Ground folks used it as a contraceptive), and my head exploded anytime I went there because of the selection of…everything…
    ..including surfboards.

  • Miller Dog

Whats up…in the July 2008 article a Chris Miller Dog sold for $773 USD. Now someone tries to get $500 and they are considered crazy. If I had the cash I’d have bought it. That deck would be a grail to a lot of Schmitt collectors.

  • The shop I worked in had loads of those Dogtown decks back in the day (Dressens, Stonefishes etc) and we couldn’t shift ’em for love nor money. Same thing with the Black Flag decks. They just sat there on the wall, gathering dust. All the kids wanted were Johnee Kopp decks 🙁

  • I’m not seeing the return, unless the prices are significantly cheaper.

I’ll admit my heartstrings feel the tug when I see a vintage psycho stick (I only ever had the Z-blank), but I’m not spending that much for something that’ll ultimately hang on the wall and spawn those boring “Back in the day” discussions…

Skaters are like fisherman. We need very little prompting to wax philosophical on the days of yore.

  • A

Insulting bid? Rude replies and juvenile retorts. What a sensitive bunch. Sounds like a gaggle of high school girls.

  • that costume deal is sickness

  • houseofneil

OK, so I guess I haven’t been up to date with some of the drama going on out there. Apparently the $3000 Suicidal deck isn’t. An offer was made which the seller thought was insulting, so a rude response was sent back, causing the BIN button to be pressed with no intention of ever buying the deck. So there you go. It’s didn’t really sell for $3000.
