Board shops suck

True story. I heard SnA got a mention in “On Board Trash” so I went to pick one up at a local “board shop” here in Sarasota Fl, where I’m staying for a few days. I walk in to this huge store full of skateboards, surfboards, skimboards and god knows what else. I glance around at the counter and see nothing. I ask the guy behind the counter

“Do you have Thrasher?”
“No, I don’t”
“Whaaaa????”
“I know…”

So I turned around and walked out. the whole thing took less than a minute. I don’t subscribe to Thrasher, but I fully expect any self respecting skateboard shop to carry it. Who is that kook in the picture? It’s Eddie Albert playing Oliver on Green Acres but dressed up as Jethro Clampett. Seriously. I know there’s a couple of real skate shops here. I’m going to search one out.

All skate mags suck. why waste your time reading them? This includes juice(too wordy), concrete wave (gay ass kooks), thrasher(past its prime phelps and the mag), transworld(jock shoe catalog),skateboarder(this aint the origional skateboarder),big brother r.i.p(dave carnie was the editor, too much poop)The Skateboard Mag(dave carnie is the editor) concussion r.i.p(bitter old men,way too many crails and frontside airs) Lowcard(no color, not wordy enough) SBC skateboarding(too canadian) etc etc.
Thrasher park in san leandro is sick its got concrete quarters on asphalt with tiny ass broomstick coping. The kinked fun box thing is good to. That small 3/4 bowl is pretty tight as well. The only park that is better in the area is alameda.

  • so did you find out? was sna really mentioned in “on board trash”? or was that just the segue into the story about the shop not having thrasher?

  • That movie could very well be the end (via UDRP action) of Bobcat’s web fun. Very smart move not trying to profit all these years. When push comes to shove, that’s usually the issue.

  • Thrasher park in San Leandro is sick alright…

if by sick you mean sucking

  • douglas county sucks

Thrasher is the name of the sickest skate park in california in a place called san leandro right next to oakland “thrasher park”. It is also the name of that one skateboard mag. The editor guy used to work at that one skate shop in sf where I bought my skateboards as a kid “fogtown skates”. What’s sleestak?

  • what’s Thrasher?

  • That is a big board but did anybody notice the shoelace belt?

  • I wasn’t a big Green Acres fan, but the show did had a catchy tune.
I liked Elvis Hitlers version “Green Haze”.

  • A

I can’t believe nobody has commented on the Green Acres shot. It’s from 1967. Look at the size of that board!

  • Estes' Ghost

That ‘send back’ clause was short lived after Mags realized they lost even more money in publishing too many copies were reduced to create demand- then 2 other magazines launched making it an advertising nightmare for brands.

  • A

    Yeah, times have changed.

Estes, they don’t let you send back the unsold ones? This place was huge, like the size of 3 or 4 Cal Sk8s. I think they could afford it.

  • skaterhusseindave

My wife has a librarian friend who gives me their old Thrashers a years worth at a time. It’s the only reason I get ’em anymore…

  • Estes' Ghost

As a buyer for a small core skateshop- we felt the 120 bucks a month to stock an issue ‘that might’ get bought will eventually just be ‘browsed’ and we felt you can do that at the library. Not one month did we ever completely sell out- and besides- 411 Skate Video Magazine killed the prints, only to die themselves.

  • It’s weird but I’ve worked in a few skate shops and people seldom ever buy magazines there. It seems like something you buy at a grocery store as a after thought. We wouldn’t make shit off of magazines even if we did sell ’em, we just carry them to look good and give the lurkers something to look at after they’re done small talking us to death.

  • rectangle pool on the north side of Webber east of Benevia. you’ll see on the map that it is set a ways off the road in an abandon country club. best access is though the small patch of yard between the main fence and the building. The South west corner of the building.

It was to green to see the bottom, I probed with a stick and it seemed to have transition.

  • If you have an interest in architecture or subcultures (people watching) head towards Bahivista and Beniva. There is a Amish and Mennonite vacation community with crazy tiny well kept houses. In that area there is also an Amish and Mennonite retirement trailer park… Amazing trailers.

I don’t miss the pad Nazi mentality. Those parks are always like visiting Utah or french Canada, so clean and proper.

X-mas before last I found a pool, It was full at the time and I lacked man power and time. I’ll Google map it for you.

  • No Thrasher at the shop?

    Sounds like my kinda place.

  • Thrasher is core. it’s “the only mag”. the others are “fag rags”. I always buy it when I’m picking up “People” and “Seventeen”

  • A

“dude, they have thrasher at the grocery store.” Right! I can probably go to Walgreens and get it, but not at the “Compound Board Shop” I was going to support a “core shop” instead of going to the grocery store.

I think I’m going to hit Englewood on Saturday. It’s the nearest one that I haven’t been too. I’ll hit the local Sarasota park too, I think there’s an old man sesh on Friday night. I’d go during the day but they were closed durig school hours last time I was here.

Inlaws… so I’m here about once a year.

  • houseofneil

dude, they have thrasher at the grocery store.

  • looks like you’ve gotta bite the bullet and head downtown by the movie theater. Venice skates right? Naples was fun but englewood (oyster creek park)is a lot closer and arguably more fun.
I’m in SRQ every other x-mas from 2000 to death.

Team Pain parks are a blast. Soak up the rays for us.

  • Try to hit up ‘The Edge’ park in Naples… no Thrasher, but its a good place to skate.

  • Just go to Borders.
