Made for Skate

The diffusion of skateboarding into the popular culture as a fashion trend always tweaked me but blue jeans and t-shirts were popularized by poseurs trying to look proletarian. Any thoughtless aping of an idea is to be despised. That said, I will admit to fascination with all aspects of the history of skateboarding. This looks like a well designed book about skate shoes. Great photographs of the shoes are juxtaposed with magazine layouts and ads. Based on the collection of the Museum of Skateboard History in Stuttgart, Germany which we posted about before. I found the book here but you can also find it at Amazon

  1. blown-out vans are the best

  2. are vans or nikes really made for skateboarding? i doubt so. in the 70s skaters found vans useful and used them for skateboarding. in the 80s the same happened with nike air jordans and the like. these shoes orginally were not made for skateboarding but for tennis and basketball playing.
    or am i wrong?

  3. Anything with thick leather sides and toes (for ollies, kick/heel flips) and thick heel padding works for me.. (heel bruises are the WORST!) I like how the old Vision street wear shoes had the oval rubber ollie patch.. Havent seen any shoes with those lately. Otherwise they were total crap.

originally yes, but I can tell you that the new SB nikes are made 100% for skateboarding. I can go through 2 pairs of vans a year, but the Nike SB hitops I got last winter still look pretty much brand new after a full year of skating. The soles are almost unmarked and the uppers are a little scuffed but still great.

  5. I switched to high tops exclusively after folding my ankle… NikeSB were my first pair (since the 90s) and they were great. Lasted over a year and really felt I had the extra support I needed for the ankle (even if it was just in my head). I dig ’em, but the price is stupid. Skating in Adidas highs now. Also very durable.

I love the Adidas campus low tops, they instantly feel broke in from the 1st session and full of 3 stripe style 🙂

  7. I’ll add to the rave over Adidas skate shoes, here! My campus vulks are better than the original Rowley Vans I skated for years!
